Trump halts Afghan immigration after D.C. shooting incident

 November 27, 2025

The Trump administration has slammed the brakes on all Afghan immigration following a violent attack on two West Virginia National Guard members in Washington, D.C.

The Daily Caller reported that the incident, which unfolded on Wednesday, saw an Afghan national allegedly open fire on the guardsmen, prompting an immediate policy shift to indefinitely halt immigration processes for Afghan nationals.

Just before 3 p.m. local time on Wednesday, chaos erupted at the intersection of 17th and I Street NW in the nation’s capital. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, with reports of a helicopter landing on the National Mall to aid in the crisis.

The two National Guard members, now fighting for their lives in critical condition, were allegedly shot by Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who entered the U.S. in 2021 under the Biden administration’s Operation Allies Welcome.

Investigators are treating this as a targeted attack, with chilling reports that Lakanwal shouted “Allahu akbar!” before unleashing gunfire with a revolver.

Immigration Policy Faces Immediate Overhaul

By Wednesday night, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced a complete stop to processing immigration requests for Afghan nationals, citing the need for a thorough review of security and vetting measures.

“Effective immediately, processing of all immigration requests relating to Afghan nationals is stopped indefinitely pending further review of security and vetting protocols,” USCIS declared on social media.

While the agency claims to prioritize the “safety of our homeland,” one must wonder if this reactive measure is enough to address years of lax border policies that critics argue have left the nation vulnerable.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem didn’t mince words when addressing the suspect’s background, pointing fingers at previous leadership.

“The suspect who shot our brave National Guardsmen is an Afghan national who was one of the many unvetted, mass paroled into the United States under Operation Allies Welcome on September 8, 2021, under the Biden Administration,” Noem stated.

Such a statement cuts to the core of conservative concerns about unchecked immigration programs—shouldn’t thorough vetting be the bare minimum before opening the door to potential risks?

National Guard Heroes Under Fire

Noem also paid tribute to the wounded guardsmen, reminding the public of their humanity amid this tragedy.

“These men and women of the National Guard are mothers, fathers, sisters, daughters, children of God, carrying out the same basic public safety and immigration laws enshrined in law for decades,” she emphasized.

It’s a sobering reminder that while policy debates rage on, real lives—those of our protectors—hang in the balance, and perhaps it’s time for the chattering class to stop politicizing their sacrifice and start supporting common-sense security reforms.
