Minnesota workers blast Gov. Walz over $1B fraud scandal

 December 2, 2025

Brace yourselves, Minnesota taxpayers—your hard-earned dollars have vanished into a $1 billion black hole under Governor Tim Walz’s watch.

The New York Post reported that in what’s being called the largest COVID-19 fraud case in the nation, the Feeding Our Future scandal has exposed massive theft of public funds, systemic failures, and accusations of retaliation against state workers who dared to sound the alarm.

Let’s rewind to 2016, when Feeding Our Future, a nonprofit meant to feed school children, was founded in Minnesota.

Over the next few years, this organization partnered with local businesses to provide food aid, but the money was siphoned off for luxury goods and foreign real estate, not hungry kids.

By the time federal investigators caught on in 2022, the scam had ballooned, with fraudsters exploiting Minnesota’s social safety net through fake social service companies billing the state for nonexistent work.

Other organizations jumped on the bandwagon, and a homelessness program’s budget exploded from $2.6 million in 2021 to $104 million last year, per The New York Times, thanks to unchecked fraud.

State Workers Silenced by Leadership

Hundreds of Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) employees—over 480, to be exact—claim they witnessed this fraud firsthand but were shut down, reassigned, or told to zip it.

Their X account paints a chilling picture of an administration more worried about optics than accountability, alleging leadership avoided action out of fear of appearing discriminatory toward certain communities.

“Tim Walz systematically retaliated against whistleblowers using monitoring, threats, repression, and did his best to discredit fraud reports,” the DHS employees’ X account declared. Well, if that’s partnership, Minnesota might need a new dictionary.

“It’s scary, isolating and left us wondering who we can turn to,” the same account shared, highlighting the personal toll on those trying to protect taxpayer money. If only Walz’s administration had shown half as much energy in stopping fraud as it allegedly did in silencing critics.

Instead, workers claim agency leaders appointed by Walz ignored rules and even threatened whistleblowers’ families to keep fraud under wraps—hardly the transparency voters expect.

Now, these embattled DHS staffers are begging for federal help, admitting they can’t fight this battle alone against a system they say Walz has weakened by disempowering oversight bodies like the Office of the Legislative Auditor.

Federal Action and Political Fallout

On the legal front, the Justice Department has prosecuted 78 defendants in the Feeding Our Future scheme as of last week, with 59 convictions so far, though many charges came from federal, not state, efforts.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer didn’t mince words, calling Minnesota “the land of 10,000 frauds under Tim Walz” in a statement to The Post. That’s a catchy slogan for a state that shouldn’t be proud of this record.

Walz, for his part, has deflected criticism by claiming he takes responsibility for putting people in jail, though one wonders if he’s just riding the coattails of federal prosecutors while the state’s safeguards crumble. It’s a convenient stance for a governor launching a campaign for a third term, a feat not achieved in Minnesota since 1963.
