Trump brokers peace between Thailand and Cambodia

 December 12, 2025

President Donald Trump has just pulled off a diplomatic feat that could keep Southeast Asia from spiraling into chaos.

Trump announced on Friday that Thailand and Cambodia, after days of deadly border clashes, have agreed to stop the gunfire and recommit to a fragile peace deal brokered just weeks ago.

Newsmax reported that this mess kicked off six weeks back when a peace accord was signed in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with Trump himself present to seal the deal. Fast forward to Monday, when a roadside bomb tore through Thai soldiers, leaving several dead and wounded, igniting a firestorm of retaliation.

Thailand hit back hard with air strikes on Cambodian territory, and Cambodia wasn’t about to sit quietly, responding with rocket salvos of their own.

The result? Over 20 lives lost and more than half a million people displaced along a border that’s been disputed for decades, thanks to colonial-era maps drawn by France.

Escalation and a History of Conflict

Violence raged on through Thursday night, with reports of heavy shelling and explosions echoing near the clash sites.

This isn’t new—tensions over this frontier have simmered for generations, often boiling over into military standoffs fueled by domestic politics and the risk of rapid escalation from single sparks.

Regional experts have long warned that any peace deal here is shaky at best, given the deep-rooted nature of the territorial spat.

Enter President Trump, who picked up the phone on Friday to speak with Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet.

“I had a very good conversation this morning with the Prime Minister of Thailand, Anutin Charnvirakul, and the Prime Minister of Cambodia, Hun Manet, concerning the very unfortunate reawakening of their long-running War,” Trump stated, signaling his direct involvement in dousing the flames.

“Have agreed to CEASE all shooting effective this evening, and go back to the original Peace Accord made with me, and them, with the help of the Great Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim,” he added, showcasing a return to sanity that benefits everyone.

Peace Deal Hangs in a Fragile Balance

Now, let’s not pop the champagne just yet—analysts caution that while the shooting may stop for now, the underlying issues aren’t going anywhere.

Trump’s knack for deal-making is commendable, especially when you recall his July warning to both nations that he’d pull tariff negotiations if they didn’t cool off—a reminder that America’s economic leverage still speaks loudly.

While progressive types might scoff at such strong-arm tactics, it’s hard to argue with results when over half a million displaced souls might get a chance to return home, and two nations step back from the brink of a larger conflict.
