Trump administration refutes Ilhan Omar's claim that ICE profiled her son

 December 16, 2025

Rep. Ilhan Omar has lobbed a bombshell accusation at ICE, claiming they targeted her son for a citizenship check, only to be met with a firm denial from the Trump administration.

Newsmax reported that Omar alleges her son was stopped by immigration agents outside a Target store, while Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons insists there’s no evidence to back her story.

On Saturday, Omar publicly stated that federal immigration agents pulled over her son outside a Target, demanding he prove his citizenship with a U.S. passport.

By Sunday, she doubled down, framing the encounter as racial profiling. Her office didn’t hold back, either, with a spokesperson claiming the incident was a clear case of bias.

ICE Fires Back with 'No Record'

“ICE has absolutely ZERO record of its officers or agents pulling over Congresswoman Omar’s son,” Lyons declared to the Washington Examiner, calling the accusation baseless. If there’s no paper trail, one has to wonder—where’s the proof to support such a serious charge?

Omar’s team shot back on Tuesday, refusing to let the denial stand unchallenged. Her spokeswoman told the Examiner, “The congresswoman’s son and others were pulled over by ICE, racially profiled, and forced to prove their citizenship with a passport.” That’s a bold claim, but without hard evidence, it’s tough to see it as more than political theater.

Lyons didn’t mince words, labeling the profiling allegations as “disgusting, reckless, and categorically false” in his response. The idea that ICE targets based on skin color rather than immigration status is, in his view, a cheap shot at dedicated agents. It’s a point worth considering—enforcement should hinge on legal standing, not personal traits.

Not content to leave it there, Omar’s office took a swipe at ICE’s credibility, stating it’s “no surprise that an agency known for disappearing people also can’t keep its records straight.” That’s a stinging jab, but it sidesteps the core issue: where’s the documentation of this alleged stop?

Meanwhile, the Trump administration has ramped up immigration enforcement in Minnesota through Operation Metro Surge. Additional agents have been deployed to the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, focusing on undocumented individuals, especially within Somali and Latino communities.

Lyons remains adamant that enforcement targets are determined by immigration status, not ethnicity or race. It’s a policy-driven stance that aims to cut through accusations of bias. Still, in a heated political climate, perceptions often outrun the facts.

Broader Tensions with Omar Surface

Adding another layer to this saga, Omar herself—a Somali American—has faced federal scrutiny over unrelated immigration fraud allegations.

Claims have surfaced suggesting a marriage to her brother to facilitate his U.S. entry, though she vehemently denies any wrongdoing. Documents tied to these allegations have emerged, keeping the spotlight on her past.

Border Czar Tom Homan recently weighed in on Newsmax, stating, “there was immigration fraud involved.” He added that files are being reviewed to dig deeper into the matter. While unrelated to the Target incident, it underscores the ongoing friction between Omar and federal authorities.

This isn’t just a personal spat—it’s a microcosm of larger debates over immigration policy and enforcement tactics. Omar’s accusations tap into concerns about overreach, while ICE’s denial reflects a push to maintain credibility amid intense scrutiny.

Operation Metro Surge may be intensifying enforcement in Minnesota, but that alone doesn’t prove Omar’s story—or disprove it. The lack of a middle ground here is frustrating for anyone seeking clarity over partisan noise.
