In a daring pre-dawn maneuver, the U.S. Coast Guard, backed by the Department of War, intercepted an oil tanker off Venezuela’s coast, sending a clear message to those flouting sanctions.
Breitbart reported that this high-stakes operation on Saturday targeted the tanker “Centuries,” accused of hauling sanctioned Venezuelan crude to fund narco-terror activities, while Venezuela cries foul, labeling it piracy.
Earlier this month, President Donald Trump took a hard line, branding the Venezuelan regime a Foreign Terrorist Organization and imposing a naval blockade to choke off their oil trade.
Not long after, the administration ordered the seizure of another tanker bound for Cuba, showing this isn’t a one-off but a sustained campaign against Maduro’s dealings.
Then came the Dec. 20 operation, a stealthy “lightning strike” in international waters near Venezuela, where the Panamanian-flagged “Centuries” was nabbed with its illicit cargo.
U.S. officials allege the tanker was en route to Asia, possibly China, carrying oil that violates sanctions meant to cripple narco-terror funding in the region.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem didn’t mince words, releasing footage of a Coast Guard helicopter touching down on the tanker, proving America’s reach in enforcing its policies.
“The United States will continue to pursue the illicit movement of sanctioned oil that is used to fund narco terrorism in the region,” Noem declared. Well, that’s a promise with teeth, and it’s about time someone stood up to these shadowy networks.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth doubled down, stating, “President Trump has been clear: the blockade of sanctioned oil tankers departing from, or bound for, Venezuela will remain in full force until Maduro’s criminal enterprise returns every stolen American asset.” If that’s not a line in the sand, what is?
On the other side, Venezuela’s leadership isn’t taking this lying down, with Minister of the Interior Diosdado Cabello blasting the seizure as outright theft and a violation of sovereignty.
Cabello accused the U.S. of orchestrating the “forced disappearance” of the tanker’s crew, a charge that ramps up the tension in an already volatile standoff.
President Nicolas Maduro, never one for subtlety, vowed in a fiery speech that his military is ready to “break the teeth” of what he calls the North American empire if pushed too far.
While Maduro’s rhetoric is predictably over-the-top, it’s worth acknowledging the human cost—crew members caught in the crossfire of geopolitics deserve clarity on their fate.
Still, the U.S. has every right to protect its interests and disrupt funding for terror-linked activities, especially when the evidence points to sanctioned oil fueling chaos.
This blockade isn’t just a flex; it’s a necessary stand against a regime that’s long thumbed its nose at international norms, though cooler heads must prevail to avoid outright conflict.
