Rhode Island Democrat leader filmed insulting officer during DUI arrest

 December 23, 2025

Imagine a late-night traffic stop turning into a political soap opera, complete with name-dropping and racial commentary, as a prominent Rhode Island Democrat unravels on camera.

In the early hours of Dec. 18, 2025, Maria Bucci, chair of the Cranston Democratic Committee and a former councilwoman, was pulled over in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, leading to a misdemeanor DUI charge amid a heated confrontation with police.

The New York Post reported that the incident began just after midnight when East Greenwich officers stopped Bucci, detecting a strong smell of alcohol in her vehicle.

According to the police report, Bucci’s eyes were described as severely bloodshot and glassy, and her speech was slurred as she became increasingly combative.

Bodycam footage captures her lashing out at officers, ignoring their attempts to conduct a field sobriety test outside her car.

Instead of complying, Bucci seemed more intent on reminding everyone of her status, asking, “You know who I am, right?” as if political clout might magically dissolve the situation.

Political Status and Racial Remarks

Let’s unpack that—invoking one’s title during a potential DUI stop doesn’t exactly scream accountability, and it raises questions about whether some in power expect special treatment.

Things took an even stranger turn when Bucci veered into racial territory, stating, “Cause this is disgusting, God forbid I was a black person, I’d be arrested."

While her point may have been an attempt at empathy, it lands awkwardly at best—using race as a deflection during a personal misstep feels more like a distraction than a genuine critique of systemic issues.

Bucci admitted to having a single glass of wine at a Christmas party, but officers weren’t buying the minimal-drinking claim given her demeanor and the evidence at hand.

Her behavior escalated as she continued to berate the officers, ultimately ignoring instructions and earning herself handcuffs after a series of outbursts.

The police report paints a vivid picture, noting she was “slurring and spitting when she was yelling and was extremely confrontational,” which hardly aligns with the image of a composed public figure.

Questions of Accountability Loom Large

Bucci’s political history, including past runs for Cranston mayor and state representative, adds another layer to this debacle—shouldn’t leaders hold themselves to a higher standard, especially on public roads?

As of Dec. 23, 2025, neither the state Democratic committee nor the campaign of gubernatorial candidate Helena Buonanno Foulkes, who recently praised Bucci on social media for organizing an event, have commented on the incident.

Bucci herself has not responded to outreach, leaving the public to wonder if this episode will prompt reflection or just fade into the noise of political scandals.
