Trump shops for marble in Florida for White House ballroom renovation

 January 2, 2026

President Donald Trump is turning heads again, this time by personally handpicking marble for a lavish White House Ballroom makeover that’s got preservationists up in arms.

The Daily Mail reported that from demolishing the East Wing without a nod to oversight to scouring Florida for the finest stone, Trump’s latest project is a bold blend of personal funding and legal battles with historic preservation groups.

This saga kicked off with Trump’s decision to raze the East Wing, a move that sparked immediate backlash from those who guard the nation’s architectural heritage.

Fast forward to a recent Friday morning, and the president was spotted at Arc Stone & Tile in Lake Worth, Florida, selecting marble and onyx for the ballroom.

“President Trump is purchasing marble and onyx, at his own expense, for the White House Ballroom,” a White House official confirmed, underscoring Trump’s hands-on approach to this controversial revamp.

While some might call it vanity, others see a leader willing to put his own money where his vision is, sidestepping taxpayer burden in an era of bloated government spending.

Legal Hurdles and Oversight Challenges

The project isn’t without its thorns, as preservation groups have dragged the administration into court over the unapproved demolition of a historic wing.

A judge has allowed construction to proceed for now, though the White House had to submit plans to the National Capital Planning Commission by a recent Wednesday deadline.

Further scrutiny looms with a formal application already filed on Dec. 22 to both the NCPC and the Commission of Fine Arts, setting the stage for public meetings next month.

The bureaucratic dance continues with a final submission of plans slated for Jan. 30, followed by presentations to oversight bodies in February and March.

During a prior court hearing, Department of Justice lawyers argued that construction must press on for national security, citing the bunker beneath the former East Wing as a critical concern.

While progressive critics might scoff at such justifications, the reality of safeguarding our nation’s nerve center isn’t a trivial matter to dismiss.

Trump’s Marble Obsession Shines Through

Trump’s affinity for marble isn’t new—he’s already decked out the Lincoln Bedroom bathroom and Palm Room floor with the stuff, showing a consistent flair for opulence.

“This room is the real deal. That’s called white marble,” Trump remarked while in Doha, Qatar, marveling at the material’s rarity and signing agreements with Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

Such enthusiasm might raise eyebrows among the minimalist crowd, but it’s hard to deny the man’s passion for building spaces that reflect strength and grandeur, a refreshing contrast to the drab conformity of modern design.
