Federal officer has finger bitten off by rioter in Minneapolis after shooting

 January 24, 2026

A federal Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) officer in Minneapolis suffered a severe injury on Saturday when a rioter bit off his finger during violent unrest.

The Post Millennial reported that the incident followed the fatal shooting of anti-ICE activist Alex Pretti by Border Patrol agents during an operation targeting a criminal suspect, which sparked riots in the city, as detailed by DHS and Border Patrol officials, while President Trump commented on the situation and referenced unrelated fraud concerns in Minnesota.

The issue has ignited fierce debate over law enforcement tactics and immigration policy in the Twin Cities, where tensions have been high for weeks.

Saturday morning started with a Border Patrol operation to apprehend a suspect charged with violent crimes, only to end in tragedy when Pretti approached agents with a nine-millimeter semi-automatic handgun.

Border Patrol head Greg Bovino explained that agents tried to disarm Pretti, but the situation escalated, leading to defensive gunfire from an agent with eight years of experience.

Details of the Fatal Encounter

Bovino’s account paints a picture of a split-second decision under pressure.

“An individual approached us Border Patrol agents with a nine-millimeter semi-automatic handgun,” Bovino said. “The agents attempted to disarm the individual, but he violently resisted, fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers, a Border Patrol agent fired defensive shots.”

Video footage from multiple angles and a DHS-released photo of the weapon corroborate the official narrative, though the loss of life remains a bitter pill for many to swallow.

Following the shooting, angry crowds gathered at the scene, erecting barricades and clashing with law enforcement.

The violence reached a shocking peak when an HSI officer was attacked, losing a finger to a rioter’s bite, as confirmed by DHS spokesman Tricia McLaughlin.

“In Minneapolis, these rioters attacked our law enforcement officer and one of them bit off our HSI officer’s finger,” McLaughlin stated. “He will lose his finger.”

Tensions Build After Recent Incident

This unrest comes just weeks after another fatal encounter involving anti-ICE activist Renee Good, who was killed after driving her car into an ICE agent, prompting the agent to fire in response.

The Twin Cities have seen ongoing demonstrations against ICE operations, with many locals frustrated by what they see as heavy-handed federal tactics, though others argue these policies are necessary for public safety.

Multiple arrests have been made during the latest riots, but the cycle of confrontation shows no sign of slowing, leaving communities on edge and officers in harm’s way.
