Trump posts image of handgun, accuses Minnesota officials of inciting unrest after fatal shooting by federal agent

 January 24, 2026

Minneapolis is reeling after a deadly encounter between federal agents and a local man ended in tragedy on Saturday, sparking outrage from both former President Donald Trump and state leaders.

The Daily Mail reported that on Saturday, Trump shared a photograph of a semi-automatic handgun on Truth Social, describing it as loaded, hours after Alex Jeffrey Pretti, 37, was killed by a Border Patrol agent during a targeted enforcement action in Minneapolis, as confirmed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The incident, the third involving federal agents in the city in recent weeks, led to protests near the scene, with DHS reporting that Pretti was armed and that the firearm shown in Trump’s post was recovered at the location.

The shooting has ignited a firestorm of debate over federal operations in Minnesota and the role of local authorities in supporting or opposing them.

Details of the Fatal Encounter Emerge

Video footage of the incident shows multiple federal agents wrestling Pretti to the ground before one agent fired several shots into his chest at close range. After the gunfire, the agents dispersed from the scene, leaving behind a community in shock.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara clarified that Pretti, a 37-year-old white man, was a lawful gun owner with a permit and had no serious criminal history, only minor parking tickets on record. State law allows permit holders to openly carry handguns in public, raising questions about the context of the altercation.

DHS later confirmed to the Daily Mail that the firearm and extra ammunition depicted in Trump’s post were taken into custody, aligning with their statement that Pretti was armed during the encounter.

Trump didn’t hold back, accusing Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz of “inciting insurrection” and abandoning federal officers by allegedly preventing local police from assisting.

He questioned why local law enforcement wasn’t there to protect ICE agents, suggesting political interference at the highest levels of state leadership. There’s a whiff of irony in leaders who champion safety yet seem to leave federal agents twisting in the wind.

In his Truth Social post, Trump wrote, “Where are the local Police? Why weren't they allowed to protect ICE Officers?” His frustration echoes a broader concern about whether progressive policies are handcuffing law enforcement’s ability to maintain order.

Trump also claimed, without evidence, that massive fraud involving billions of dollars had been stolen from Minnesota, likening it to a bank robbery, and tied the federal operation to recovering taxpayer money.

While the accusation lacks substantiation, it fuels a narrative of systemic mismanagement under Democratic leadership. One wonders if these claims will ever see the light of evidence or remain political theater.

Protests Erupt in Minneapolis Streets

Chaos unfolded near the shooting site as roughly 200 protesters, described by DHS as “rioters,” gathered, obstructing and assaulting law enforcement, according to an official statement.

The Minnesota State Patrol declared an unlawful assembly, while protesters blocked streets with dumpsters and shouted at agents to leave. Tear gas and flash-bangs were deployed, with fumes lingering and small fires being set, as reported by Chief O’Hara.

Local leaders pushed back hard against the federal presence. Mayor Frey called the immigration crackdown an “invasion” and demanded Trump show leadership by pulling agents out, arguing it’s not enhancing safety. His plea for action sounds noble, but sidesteps the question of why federal agents felt compelled to act in the first place.

Governor Walz took to X, stating, “Minnesota has had it. This is sickening,” urging an immediate end to the operation. His outrage is palpable, yet it glosses over the reality of violent resistance faced by agents on the ground.

This incident follows a troubling pattern, with two other recent shootings involving federal agents in Minneapolis, including the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good on Jan. 7 and another wounding just a week later.

A separate event last week saw an ICE agent fire a “defensive shot” at Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis during a violent traffic stop, according to DHS. The string of encounters paints a picture of escalating tensions that neither side seems equipped to de-escalate.

Rep. Ilhan Omar shared the video online, labeling it “an execution by immigration enforcement” and accusing federal agents of terrorizing communities. Her charged rhetoric may resonate with some, but it risks inflaming an already volatile situation without addressing the documented violence against agents. Cooler heads must prevail if dialogue is to replace tear gas.
