Ilhan Omar hits back at Trump after Trump confirms DOJ investigating Omar's mysterious wealth

 January 26, 2026

President Donald Trump has stirred controversy by claiming on social media that the Department of Justice and Congress are investigating Representative Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, amid ongoing federal fraud probes in her state.

Newsweek reported that on Monday, Trump posted on Truth Social about Omar, tying her to fraud investigations in Minnesota and the deployment of additional federal agents to the area, while also announcing the assignment of former ICE official Tom Homan to the state and alleging a massive welfare fraud scheme worth over $20 billion.

Trump’s post didn’t hold back, stating, “The DOJ and Congress are looking at ‘Congresswoman’ Illhan [sic] Omar, who left Somalia with NOTHING, and is now reportedly worth more than 44 Million Dollars."

But where’s the evidence? Public filings through the House disclosure portal show no support for this $44 million figure, casting doubt on the claim’s foundation.

Omar fired back swiftly on X, declaring, “Sorry, Trump, your support is collapsing and you’re panicking." She dismissed his words as mere deflection, pointing out that years of scrutiny have turned up nothing. It’s a sharp rebuttal, though one wonders if the public will see this as a dodge or a defense.

Fraud Investigations Fuel Minnesota Tensions

Minnesota is already a hotbed of tension, with federal fraud cases like Feeding Our Future—described by prosecutors as one of the largest COVID-19-related scams—resulting in 57 convictions as of late 2025. Additional probes into childcare centers and other services signal that more legal battles loom.

Trump’s decision to send Homan, his border czar, to Minneapolis adds fuel to the fire, with the president citing both fraud and concerns over unauthorized migration as justification.

Yet, the recent deaths of two U.S. citizens, Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti, at the hands of federal agents in Minneapolis have only deepened local distrust of federal overreach.

Protesters clash with agents, and local officials spar with the White House—hardly a recipe for calm. Trump’s narrative of cleaning up a mess may resonate with some, but others see it as a heavy-handed distraction from deeper governance issues.

Turning to Omar’s finances, Trump’s unsubstantiated claim of her $44 million net worth raises eyebrows, especially since her disclosures for 2022 and 2023 pegged her wealth below $250,000. A reported jump in 2024, tied to businesses like eStCru LLC and Rose Lake Capital linked to her husband, Tim Mynett, still falls far short of Trump’s figure.

Public documents reveal Omar’s past struggles with student loans and credit card debt, painting a picture of modest means until recently. Critics might ask how such a rapid shift occurred, but without hard numbers, it’s all speculation dressed up as scandal.

Omar herself has long pushed back on wealth rumors, stating last year, “I am a working mom with student loan debt” (Business Insider). That’s a relatable line for many Americans, though skeptics might wonder if full transparency on her assets is still lacking.

Political Theater or Genuine Concern?

Let’s not ignore the broader context—Trump’s focus on Minnesota fraud, including oversight failures in state health grants, signals a real problem that deserves attention.

But tying it to Omar without evidence feels more like political theater than a genuine call for accountability.

Homan’s past comments on Newsmax about looking into Omar, coupled with unproven allegations about her immigration history—which she’s denied and countered with her U.S. citizenship since 2000—add another layer of intrigue. It’s a messy mix of policy and personal jabs that muddies the waters.

At the end of the day, Minnesota’s fraud issues are serious, and federal resources to address them could be a net positive. But if this push is just a smokescreen to target political foes like Omar, it risks undermining trust in the very institutions meant to deliver justice. The public deserves clarity, not conspiracy.
