Tom Homan directs Border Patrol exit from Minneapolis in major operational shift

 January 26, 2026

Violence in Minneapolis has taken a dramatic turn as Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino is ordered to depart the city amid a sweeping reorganization.

On Saturday, tensions boiled over after the death of 37-year-old ICU nurse Alex Pretti during a protest, prompting President Donald Trump to redirect operational control from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to Border Czar Tom Homan, who initiated the shakeup on Monday, with a press conference expected later today to confirm Bovino’s exit along with hundreds of his agents.

The Daily Mail reported that with violence erupting after Pretti’s death, Homan’s decision to pull Bovino and his team aims to calm the clashes between agents and protesters.

It’s a bold move, one that suggests a pivot away from heavy-handed enforcement toward de-escalation. Whether this will cool tempers or simply shift the spotlight remains to be seen.

Bovino’s Controversial Tenure Under Scrutiny

Bovino, a 30-year veteran of Border Patrol, has been a polarizing figure, handpicked last year from his post in El Centro, California, to lead high-profile immigration enforcement operations in cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, Charlotte, and Minneapolis.

His aggressive “turn and burn” approach, including visible crackdowns at gas stations and Home Depots, drew sharp criticism from local officials and civil rights advocates, while his uncovered face and distinctive trench coat became a viral symbol of federal overreach.

California Governor Gavin Newsom didn’t mince words on X, stating, “Greg Bovino dressed up as if he literally went on eBay and purchased SS garb.”

Bovino’s flair for drama—once swimming across a canal in California as a migrant deterrence stunt—has kept him in the spotlight, often inviting journalists to witness his antics.

Yet, his credibility took a hit when a federal judge last November called him “evasive” and accused him of “outright lying” in testimony about a Chicago operation, noting video evidence contradicted his claims.

That’s hardly the kind of record you’d frame on the wall.

Political Tensions and White House Moves

Behind the scenes, Bovino’s ties to Noem and her rumored associate Corey Lewandowski have fueled whispers of a push to replace current Border Patrol chief Rodney Scott, a Homan ally, with Bovino reporting directly to Noem in an unusual power play.

Trump, reportedly unsettled by cable news portrayals of the crisis over Sunday and Monday, has now sidelined Noem, with Homan and his trusted team taking the reins—a clear signal of where the White House’s confidence lies.

If Noem’s fading influence wasn’t obvious before, Homan’s boots on the ground make it undeniable.
