Minneapolis was rocked by a startling incident on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, when a man disrupted a town hall event featuring Rep. Ilhan Omar.
ABC News reported that during the event, 55-year-old Anthony Kazmierczak charged the podium where Omar was speaking, squirted an unknown liquid at her using a syringe, and was subsequently tackled by a security guard before being arrested by Minneapolis police on suspicion of third-degree assault.
The FBI has since taken over the investigation, as announced on Wednesday, while preliminary reports from Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty indicate the liquid was non-toxic.
The disturbance caused cries of alarm among those present at the town hall. Thankfully, Rep. Omar did not appear to be injured during the confrontation.
Hennepin County Attorney’s office is now reviewing potential charges against Kazmierczak, who was booked into jail following the event.
The incident has sparked debate over the escalating political tensions in Minneapolis, especially given the timing.
Just before the disruption, Omar had called for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a policy proposal that often divides opinion sharply.
This comes amid a broader clash between local officials and the Trump administration over a recent immigration enforcement push in the city, which has tragically resulted in two U.S. citizens being killed in shootings involving federal agents.
Rep. Omar, undeterred, addressed the incident with resolve, stating, “I'm going to finish my remarks. It is important for me to continue.”
Her insistence on pressing forward might resonate with some, but it also raises questions about whether such defiance overlooks the growing risks public figures face—risks underscored by U.S. Capitol Police reporting over 14,900 concerning threats against Congress members last year alone.
President Donald Trump, never one to shy from commentary on Omar, offered a skeptical take during a phone interview with ABC News’ Senior Political Correspondent Rachel Scott, saying, “I don't think about her.”
While his dismissal might play well with those frustrated by Omar’s progressive agenda, it sidesteps the seriousness of an apparent assault on a sitting member of Congress, regardless of political affiliation.
