Rep. Adam Smith says Congress must impeach and remove President Trump right away, claiming the commander in chief is too disconnected from reality to wait two years for voters.
The Washington Democrat made that call on Saturday’s broadcast of CNN’s “Newsroom,” telling host Jessica Dean that impeachment is the only way forward.
Breitbart captured the exchange in which Smith refused to wait for the next presidential election and instead pushed immediate removal from office.
Smith framed the choice as urgent. He said Trump is ignoring both Congress and the courts while a war “continues to spin out of control.”
"President Trump is not paying any attention to Congress. He’s not paying any attention to the courts. He’s doing what he wants to do. I think the only way to end this war is to remove Donald Trump from office. Okay. I think he is so disconnected from reality right now that even as he sees this war going on, he’s talking about how great it’s going, how everything’s going wonderfully."
Dean pressed him on the meaning. She asked whether he meant a formal impeachment or simply voting Democrats into power at the next presidential election.
Smith left no doubt.
"No. I mean, I, at this point, I think it has to be impeachment. I mean, he’s so out of control in so many different directions that we can’t wait two years. You know, we wait two years, and then what? I mean, where are we at as this war continues to spin out of control? You know, he has no exit strategy. He’s not listening to anybody. And he’s more concerned with his ballroom than he is with what’s actually going on in this war. So, yeah, we’re in a very, very dangerous situation and there are no good options."
Smith’s own words put the timeline in plain view. He rejected the normal two-year wait until the next presidential election and called for removal by impeachment instead.
He offered no bill number, no articles of impeachment, and no committee action. The demand stayed at the level of a television appearance.
In the same breath he conceded “there are no good options,” yet still pointed to stripping a sitting president of office rather than letting the public decide at the ballot box.
The congressman accused Trump of caring more about “his ballroom” than the conflict, of lacking an exit strategy, and of refusing to listen. Those remain Smith’s claims, delivered on cable news without accompanying legislation or bipartisan support shown in the broadcast.
House Democrats have reached for impeachment language before. Here a ranking member again treats removal as the preferred tool when policy disagreement runs hot.
Smith tied the call directly to the war he referenced, saying Trump is “doing what he wants to do” and talking as if the fighting is going well. He did not present new intelligence, a formal resolution, or a vote count, only the assertion that waiting two years is intolerable.
Voters already scheduled the next presidential election. Smith’s answer is to skip that calendar and move straight to impeachment.
That choice reveals the priority: reverse the last election result through Congress rather than test the argument with the country in two years.
When a member of Congress says the only path is removal and admits no good options exist, the public is entitled to notice who wants to cancel the wait for an election.
