Texas DPS Staff Sgt. Sterling Shelton died at 29 after a 15-month battle with aggressive brain cancer, leaving a wife, two young children, and his Special Operations team.
Staff Sergeant Sterling Matthias Shelton of the Texas Department of Public Safety Special Operations Group passed away on October 8, 2026, after enduring multiple brain surgeries, intensive chemotherapy, and radiation for a grade 4 astrocytoma.
Breitbart Texas reported that the 29-year-old spent his final days peacefully at home, surrounded by family, friends, and the close-knit teammates of SRT-5, known as “Tribe 5.”
DPS announced his death on social media that Friday and honored a career spent protecting Texans.
Shelton gave seven years to the Texas Department of Public Safety, including four with the elite Special Operations Group. Colleagues knew him for strength, determination, and a steady willingness to help others on and off duty. He was an avid runner and ultramarathoner, and a dedicated family man who kept fighting for more time with his wife and children even as the disease advanced.
In July 2025, symptoms that resembled heat stroke led doctors to discover a massive 6-centimeter brain tumor. The diagnosis was grade 4 astrocytoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.
What followed was a 15-month fight. Shelton underwent multiple brain surgeries along with intensive chemotherapy and radiation. During that ordeal he was awarded an honorary black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a mark of the grit he showed while still trying to remain present for his family.
His wife, Raven, stayed beside him through the final stretch. After his passing she shared a public message about the privilege of walking that last stretch with him.
Raven wrote:
"It is the greatest privilege and honor to be your wife and to be the one to walk you to the other side. I will tell the kids about you, we will keep going, and we will carry your strength with us every day."
The couple’s two young children are Ember Joy and Tyler Vance. Shelton is also survived by his parents, Blain and Stacie, and his siblings Spencer, Summer, and Ciera.
The Texas Department of Public Safety issued a formal mourning statement on social media.
The agency said:
"The Texas Department of Public Safety mourns the passing of Staff Sergeant Sterling Shelton following his courageous battle with cancer. We honor his service and the lives he touched throughout his career. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and DPS family during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Sergeant Shelton. Your service will never be forgotten."
The Texas Municipal Police Association added its own tribute to the same record of service.
TMPA stated:
"Staff Sgt. Shelton dedicated his career to serving and protecting the people of Texas. His commitment to duty, his fellow officers, and the communities he served will not be forgotten."
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Minton-Chatwell Funeral Directors in Borger, Texas. An earlier description of Shelton’s unit was corrected to make clear he served in the Texas DPS Special Operations Group, not as a Texas Ranger Special Operations officer.
Across the Lone Star State, fellow officers, friends, and citizens have answered the loss with prayers and tributes for a young sergeant who gave his best years to public safety and then spent his last months fighting simply to stay with his family a little longer.
Men who run toward danger for the rest of us deserve to be remembered by name, and Texas will remember Staff Sgt. Sterling Shelton.
