Obama backs Ilhan Omar after federal raid at her home

 October 18, 2026

Former President Barack Obama defended Rep. Ilhan Omar after a federal raid at her home, accusing the Trump administration of targeting her for criticizing the president and chasing a birthdate theory he called unsubstantiated.

In a Sunday post on X, Obama cast the scrutiny of the Minnesota Democrat as selective enforcement against a sitting member of Congress, Just the News reported.

He did not present new evidence in the post. He framed federal investigators as the problem and Omar as a law-abiding official under political pressure.

Obama calls the inquiry political punishment

Obama opened with a broad claim about democratic norms, then tied it directly to Omar.

Obama wrote on X:

"It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say,"

He continued:

"But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota."

That is the core of his case. A federal raid at her home becomes, in his telling, proof of viewpoint discrimination rather than an investigative step that must stand or fall on facts and process.

He went further on motive. Obama said the full force of Washington was landing on Omar for one reason: her criticism of the president.

Obama wrote:

"The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president,"

Birthdate theory sits at the center of his complaint

Obama also addressed the basis investigators are using, at least as he described it.

He said federal investigators are acting on an "unsubstantiated theory" about the birthdate Omar has used. He offered that label without laying out documents, warrants, or a point-by-point rebuttal in the material reported from the post.

The public record in this account is thin on operational detail. It does not name the lead agency, the date of the raid, what was seized, whether anyone was arrested, or what precise allegation is under review. It does state that a federal raid hit her home and that Obama answered with a political defense on social media.

Omar represents Minnesota in the U.S. House. Obama identified her as a law-abiding elected official and treated the investigation as retaliation for speech. No statement from Omar, the Justice Department, or the White House appears in the same report.

Political cover arrives before the facts are public

Obama’s post puts a familiar argument back on the table: that aggressive federal attention on a progressive critic must be illegitimate by default.

He presents the Trump administration as the actor and Omar as the target. He presents her criticism of the president as the trigger. He presents the birthdate issue as an “unsubstantiated theory,” not a lead that agents are required to test.

None of that replaces a case file. A raid is a concrete government action. Claims of selective targeting are also concrete, and they have to be proven, not merely declared by a former president on X.

Voters can hold two thoughts at once. Members of Congress have free-speech rights. They also answer to the same criminal and immigration-related laws as everyone else. Calling an inquiry political does not freeze it. It does not answer a theory about a birthdate. It does not tell the public what agents found at the house.

The sequence reported here is simple. Federal investigators moved on Omar’s home. Obama answered with a democracy lecture and a charge of presidential revenge. The gap between those two facts is where accountability either happens or gets talked to death.

Allies will always reach for the persecution frame when one of their own comes under the microscope. The country still needs the evidence, the warrant basis, and a clean process more than it needs another round of partisan insulation.

Federal law does not pause for progressive celebrities in Congress, and a former president’s social media defense does not close an investigation.
