Kim Kardashian has esophagus surgery after esophagitis diagnosis tied to father’s cancer death

 October 29, 2026

Kim Kardashian underwent surgery to cut out irregularities in her esophagus after an esophagitis diagnosis that hits close to home because of her father’s death from esophageal cancer.

In a Thursday preview of next week’s episode of “The Kardashians,” the reality star and Skims creator disclosed that she went under the knife following the diagnosis, Page Six reported.

Kim, 46, said she had been feeling off and dealing with throat pain before doctors flagged the problem. The condition stirred old family fears. Her father, Robert Kardashian Sr., died of esophageal cancer in 2003 at age 59.

Earlier in the episode she received the esophagitis diagnosis. She kept the news close at first.

She described the scare in a confessional.

“I’ve been feeling a little off lately,” Kim said. “My throat is, like, killing me today.”

"[The diagnosis is] something that really hits home for me. I just don’t really want to go there with my dad having passed away from esophagus cancer."

Her doctor noted inflammation and laid out next steps. Medication came first. Then a procedure to examine the esophagus and decide whether more was needed.

"I would suggest starting a medication, then come for a procedure where we could look at it and we can determine what we’re dealing with and if we really need to do anything or not."

Kim hoped pills would settle it. She also admitted she did not know what came next.

"Hopefully I can just take medication and this will go away. But I just don’t know what’s gonna happen."

The surgery that followed aimed to cut out the irregularities doctors found.

Family reaction brings the cancer link into the open

A Season 8 trailer that surfaced in September first put the diagnosis in the headlines. On camera Kim named the condition as “something called esophagitis.” An off-screen voice asked whether that was what her father died of. She answered, “Yeah.”

The clip cut to Kris Jenner. Kim’s mother did not hide the impact.

"I can’t.... It makes me want to cry."

The New York Post noted the same family reaction and supplied plain medical context. Esophagitis is inflammation of the esophagus. It can cause heartburn, trouble swallowing, and in severe cases bleeding. GERD is the most common driver. Chronic inflammation can lead to Barrett’s esophagus, which slightly raises esophageal cancer risk, though the overall risk stays low and the condition is treatable once the cause is fixed. Mayo Clinic material cited in coverage makes the same GERD-to-cancer pathway point.

Kim has aired health scares on the show before. During a previous season, doctors found a “little” brain aneurysm on an MRI they tied to stress. She later said, “Everything works out.”

This time the link to her father’s fatal illness made the stakes feel different inside the family. Reality television packages private medical moments for public view. Viewers get the confessional and the trailer reaction. They do not get the operative notes, the facility name, or a clear post-surgery status. Those details remain out of the public record so far.

What is clear is the sequence she shared: throat pain and feeling off, a diagnosis of esophagitis, a doctor’s plan for medication and a look inside the esophagus, and then surgery to remove irregularities. The father’s 2003 death from esophageal cancer sits over every step of that timeline.

Famous or not, family medical history does not care about the cameras. It only cares whether people act on the warning signs in time.
