White House initiates major layoffs amid government shutdown

 October 11, 2025

The federal government just hit the brakes hard, and thousands of workers are feeling the jolt as the White House rolls out sweeping layoffs during a grinding shutdown.

The Hill reported that this unprecedented move, sparked by a bitter stalemate with Democrats over funding, marks a sharp turn from past shutdowns, where furloughs, not firings, were the norm.

For over a week, the administration had been sounding the alarm, warning of drastic cuts if Democrats didn’t come to the table to reopen the government.

On Friday, the hammer dropped as the White House confirmed the start of reductions in force across multiple agencies, with no clear tally of the damage yet.

Russell Vought, director of the Office of Management and Budget, took to social platform X to declare, “The RIFs have begun.” Well, that’s one way to send a message—nothing says ‘negotiation’ like slashing jobs in the middle of a crisis.

An OMB spokesperson doubled down, calling the layoffs “substantial,” though they conveniently skipped the specifics on numbers or which departments took the hardest hits.

Targeting Agencies and Political Opponents

President Trump didn’t mince words on Friday evening, suggesting these cuts have a partisan flavor, aimed squarely at what he called “Democrat-oriented” roles.

Let’s be clear: using federal jobs as a political battering ram is a bold strategy, but it risks turning hardworking Americans into collateral damage in a budget brawl.

Among the agencies caught in the crossfire are the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, with whispers of thousands potentially affected.

The Department of Health and Human Services chimed in, admitting that layoff notices went out to non-essential staff “as a direct consequence of the Democrat-led shutdown.”

HHS also noted it’s shuttering what it deems “wasteful and duplicative entities” that clash with the Trump administration’s Make America Healthy Again vision—sounds like a housecleaning with an agenda.

Meanwhile, the Department of Education confirmed some of its own are getting the axe, though they’re playing coy on the headcount.

Legal Battles and Political Standoffs Loom

These layoffs aren’t just a payroll purge; they’re a legal landmine waiting to detonate, with labor unions like the AFL-CIO already promising courtroom showdowns.

Democrats and unions are crying foul, accusing the administration of weaponizing federal workers in a high-stakes game of budgetary chicken, while some Republicans, like Senate Majority Leader John Thune, initially commended the White House for holding off on cuts to pressure a deal.

But as Thune noted on Friday, with paychecks drying up, tough calls on cuts were inevitable—a harsh reality check for a gridlocked Washington where Democrats demand ObamaCare subsidy extensions and Republicans refuse to budge until the government’s doors reopen.
