Secretary of State Antony Blinken just tried to swipe credit for a peace deal that President Donald Trump brokered between Israel and Hamas.
Mediaite reported that under the Biden administration, Blinken suggested that part of this hard-fought agreement was actually crafted by his team, a claim that unleashed a firestorm of criticism from Trump and conservative voices who found the assertion laughable at best.
Blinken, who served under former President Joe Biden, took to social media with a lengthy twelve-tweet thread to tout what he saw as his administration’s role in the Israel-Hamas peace negotiations.
In one of his tweets, Blinken wrote, “It’s good that President Trump adopted and built on the plan the Biden Administration developed after months of discussion with Arab partners, Israel and the Palestinian Authority.”
Let’s unpack that for a moment—Blinken seems to think his team laid the groundwork for a deal that Trump ultimately sealed, but the notion feels like a stretch when you consider the timeline and the players involved.
Conservative commentators didn’t just raise an eyebrow; they practically rolled their eyes out of their sockets at this attempt to rewrite the narrative.
Donald Trump himself was quick to respond, dismissing Blinken’s claim with a pointed jab at the Biden administration’s track record.
Trump stated, “Everybody knows that’s a joke,” adding that the leadership under Biden was anything but effective when it came to foreign policy challenges.
It’s hard to argue with Trump’s skepticism—after all, the peace deal was finalized on his watch, not during the prior administration’s tenure.
Rep. Mike Lawler of New York didn’t hold back either, calling Blinken’s tenure as Secretary of State a series of missteps on the global stage.
Lawler remarked, “What an absolute joke!” before listing several foreign policy setbacks he believes occurred under Blinken’s watch, from Afghanistan to Ukraine.
That’s a hefty critique, and it underscores a broader conservative sentiment that Blinken’s leadership lacked the strength needed for such complex negotiations.
Voices from the media, like Miranda Devine of The New York Post, echoed similar frustrations, questioning why Blinken would even attempt to claim credit for Trump’s achievement after years of perceived diplomatic stumbles.
Other figures, including GOP operative Matt Whitlock and The Daily Wire’s Kassy Akiva, expressed a mix of disbelief and amusement at the audacity of Blinken’s statement, while Nikki Haley alum Nachama Soloveichik outright rejected any notion of Biden administration involvement.
Clearly, Blinken’s words struck a nerve, uniting a chorus of conservative critics who see this as yet another example of overreach from a team they believe consistently underdelivered on the world stage.
