Top aide to Democrat Governor Maura Healey arrested in drug trafficking bust

 October 31, 2025

Imagine walking into a state office building, expecting routine bureaucracy, only to find out it’s a drop-off point for a massive cocaine shipment.

That’s the shocking reality in Massachusetts, where a trusted aide to Democratic Governor Maura Healey has been nabbed in a drug trafficking scandal that’s shaking the Bay State to its core.

The New York Post reported that LaMar Cook, the deputy director of Healey’s western Massachusetts office, was charged with trafficking over 200 grams of cocaine, along with firearm and ammunition possession violations, after authorities uncovered a staggering 21 kilograms of the drug linked to him.

Cook, 45, held a significant role since 2023, overseeing government initiatives across four counties, as proudly stated in his LinkedIn bio.

Uncovering a Disturbing Drug Operation

Investigators first tied Cook to parcels containing roughly 13 kilograms of cocaine at Hotel UMass in Amherst, a previous workplace of his, setting the stage for a broader probe.

The investigation escalated when, just days before his arrest, authorities conducted a controlled delivery of 8 kilograms of cocaine to the Springfield State Office Building, where Cook operated daily.

Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni confirmed the consistency of evidence, stating, “Evidence collected during that operation was consistent with the narcotics recovered during the most recent controlled delivery in Springfield.”

That operation led to Cook’s arrest during a routine traffic stop on a Tuesday, catching him off guard as the net closed in.

By Wednesday, he was arraigned in Springfield District Court, pleading not guilty to the serious charges, with bail set at a modest $25,000—hardly a deterrent for someone allegedly moving kilos of contraband.

Swiftly after the arrest, Governor Healey’s administration cut ties, with a spokesperson declaring to Boston 25 News, “The conduct that occurred here is unacceptable and represents a major breach of the public trust.”

Political Fallout and Public Trust

The same spokesperson added, “Mr. Cook has been terminated from his position effective immediately.” While the firing is a start, it raises questions about how such a figure could operate under the governor’s nose.

This isn’t just a personal failing; it’s a glaring spotlight on oversight within Healey’s team, especially when state buildings—symbols of public service—are turned into drug depots.

Republican hopefuls for the 2026 governor’s race, Mike Kennealy and Brian Shortsleeve, didn’t hold back, slamming Healey’s leadership as a failure that embarrasses the entire state.

Kennealy’s sharp critique on X, “Healey has lost control of every aspect of her administration,” cuts to the heart of conservative concerns about progressive governance lacking accountability.

Shortsleeve echoed the sentiment, calling the incident “beyond shocking” on X, and demanding an explanation from Healey for how a top aide could be entangled in such a scandal. While their words sting, they reflect a broader frustration with a system that seems more focused on optics than results.
