Activists stage "ice scraper" demonstrations against immigration enforcement at Home Depot

 November 24, 2025

A group of activists just turned a Monrovia Home Depot into their personal soapbox with a stunt as frosty as the ice scrapers they brandished.

CBS News reported that over the weekend, demonstrators in Los Angeles County staged a peculiar protest at a Home Depot store to challenge federal immigration enforcement actions sweeping the area.

Their tactic wasn’t just waving signs; they each bought a 17-cent ice scraper and promptly lined up to return it, gumming up the customer service desk for almost an hour.

This deliberate clogging of the lines was meant to disrupt normal operations, and it worked like a charm.

After their buy-and-return charade, the group paraded through the store aisles, ensuring their message echoed off every shelf. Store management, clearly fed up with the disruption, opted to close the location entirely during the protest.

Activists Push for Corporate Policy Stance

Palmira Figueroa, communications director for the National Day Laborers Organizing Network, framed their gimmick with a sharp edge. “We want to scrape ICE from our communities,” she told CBS Los Angeles.

That’s a snappy soundbite, but let’s be real—disrupting a hardware store might grab attention, but does it truly tackle the root of federal policy disputes?

Figueroa also pointed out what she sees as hypocrisy in Home Depot’s response. “Oh, you can actually shut a store, right? You can shut for this, but you cannot, you have not, shut them when an ICE raid and abuse is happening,” she said.

That critique stings, but it glosses over the fact that Home Depot has previously clarified they don’t coordinate with federal agents and aren’t even tipped off about operations in their parking lots.

The activists, undeterred, are demanding the company publicly blast these enforcement actions and reject their stores being used for what Figueroa calls “fear and violence.”

That’s a hefty expectation for a retailer more accustomed to selling paint than picking political fights—asking them to take sides might be as practical as using an ice scraper to mow a lawn.

More Demonstrations Potentially on Horizon

As of now, Home Depot has kept quiet on this specific incident, with CBS Los Angeles reporting no response from the company at the time of their coverage.

Meanwhile, the protesters hinted at staging similar disruptions at other locations in the near future, suggesting this icy tactic might not be a one-off.

While their zeal to defend day laborers is clear, one has to ask if targeting hardware stores is the sharpest tool in the shed for reforming national policy—or if it’s just a flashy way to snag headlines.
