Hold onto your wallets, folks—Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is under the spotlight for some eyebrow-raising campaign spending that could make even a Wall Street tycoon blush.
Reports from third-quarter campaign finance filings reveal that Ocasio-Cortez’s team dropped a hefty $50,000 in Puerto Rico between June and September 2024 on luxury hotels, gourmet meals, and a pricey venue rental near a Bad Bunny concert she attended.
The New York Post reported that during this period, her campaign shelled out over $15,000 at two high-end hotels in San Juan, with specific filings showing $15,489.77 on accommodations alone.
Then there’s the food tab—over $10,500 on meals and catering, with $10,743.13 meticulously logged in the reports, suggesting her team wasn’t exactly dining at the local food truck.
While in Puerto Rico, Ocasio-Cortez was spotted on social media in August 2024 speaking out against gentrification at a housing development, a cause that aligns with her progressive messaging.
But the very same trip, on Aug. 10, showed a different side as videos captured her dancing in what looked like box seats at a Bad Bunny concert alongside Rep. Nydia Velázquez (D-NY) at the “El Choli” Coliseo de Puerto Rico in San Juan.
Adding fuel to the fire, her campaign spent $23,000 on a venue rental near the location of Bad Bunny’s 31-show residency tour, which drew celebrities like LeBron James and Iggy Azalea.
Now, Bad Bunny—soon to headline the Super Bowl amid some controversy over his selection—was the star of the moment, but was a campaign event really the right place to groove?
Her campaign manager, Oliver Hidalgo-Wohlleben, defended the spending, saying she “regularly travels to Puerto Rico to support local causes and host events that require both staff and security.”
Continuing that defense, Hidalgo-Wohlleben added that Ocasio-Cortez is “deeply proud of her investment in grassroots organizing and will continue to be active in advocating for both people on the island and the millions of Puerto Ricans in the diaspora.”
That’s a noble sentiment, but when you’re preaching against wealth inequality while booking luxury suites, the optics start looking like a Picasso painting—distorted and hard to interpret.
Elsewhere, her “Fighting Oligarchy” tour with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) saw thousands more spent at boutique hotels, including $5,000 at Hotel Vermont in Burlington and $3,000 at Arlo Williamsburg in New York.
While she champions socialist ideals and backs figures like New York City’s socialist mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, urging supporters to ignore critics who call their movement extreme, the lavish expenses seem to tell a different story.
Look, no one’s denying Ocasio-Cortez’s right to travel or advocate for causes she believes in, but when campaign funds are padding luxury hotel bills, it’s fair to ask if the money could better serve the working folks she claims to represent.
At the end of the day, this spending clash isn’t just about dollars—it’s about whether a leader’s actions match their rhetoric, and right now, that harmony seems as elusive as a quiet day in Washington.
