Authorities seeking second suspect in Brown University mass shooting

 December 17, 2025

Tragedy struck Brown University with a vicious shooting, and now, five days later, the hunt for answers has only deepened the frustration of a grieving community.

The Daily Mail reported that a devastating attack on Saturday at Brown University in Rhode Island left two students dead and nine injured, with authorities now searching for both the gunman and a second person seen near the shooter during the chaos.

The horror unfolded in the Barus & Holley engineering building, specifically targeting a seventh-floor classroom where students were cramming for an upcoming exam.

Two young lives, Ella Cook, 19, and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, 18, were cut short, while nine others sustained injuries in an act that law enforcement believes was deliberately planned for that exact room.

Just minutes after the bloodshed, surveillance captured the suspected gunman—a heavyset figure, about 5-foot-8, masked in black, limping along a Providence street at 2:08 p.m.—as if nothing had happened.

Even more chilling, newly released footage shows this individual casually strolling past police officers at the scene, slipping through an unsecured street exit before the area was fully locked down.

Investigation Marred by Costly Missteps

The manhunt, now in its fifth day as of Wednesday, has been plagued by blunders, including the mistaken detention and release of an unrelated ‘person of interest’ the day after the shooting.

Adding to the mess, over 1,200 campus cameras failed to deliver clear images of the shooter, with grainy footage from an outdated security system in the older section of the building offering little to go on.

While officials scramble for leads, they’ve appealed to the public for any scrap of information, admitting they’re grasping at straws over the suspect’s identity or motive.

Compounding the mystery, investigators have now released images of a second individual—described as tall and slender, wearing a blue jacket, grey hoodie, and a light-colored satchel—spotted near the gunman during the attack.

Authorities haven’t explained the connection between this person and the shooter, only noting they were in close proximity, and are urging anyone with tips to call 401-272-3121.

Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha confessed at a press conference, “Nothing new,” adding that officials remain in the dark about “any kind of motive.”

Public Frustration Over Security Failures

President Trump weighed in on Truth Social, blasting the university’s inadequate defenses with, “Why did Brown University have so few Security Cameras?”

He’s got a point—how does an Ivy League school in this day and age skimp on basic safety tech while likely funneling funds to every progressive pet project under the sun?

Critics are rightly pointing fingers at the outdated cameras and glaring gaps in security coverage, especially in older campus buildings, which left investigators with pitifully vague footage to work from.

If universities can afford endless diversity initiatives, surely a few bucks for modern surveillance isn’t too much to ask. Yet here we are, mourning two students while the shooter walks free, and a community waits for justice that feels further away with each passing day.
