Former President Joe Biden accepted a Planned Parenthood service award at a Delaware fundraising gala while the organization reported hundreds of thousands of abortions and record government money.
Jill Biden presented her husband with the Sonia Schorr Sloan Service Award on Thursday evening at Planned Parenthood of Delaware’s Chocolate and Champagne Gala. The former president, 83, told the crowd the recognition was an incredible honor and tied his political career to the award’s namesake.
Breitbart News reported that Biden used the night to praise longtime abortion activist Sonia Schorr Sloan, known as Sonny Sloan, and to attack the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade. He did not address the abortion totals or the taxpayer dollars flowing to the group during and after his White House years.
Biden told attendees he would not have become a U.S. senator or president if it weren’t for Sonny Sloan. He said she would have felt devastated, along with anger and astonishment, after the 2022 Dobbs decision returned abortion policy to the states. He added that Sloan wasn’t afraid and would not have spent a single moment wringing her hands.
He framed his own record as following her example.
Biden said:
“Following the Dobbs decision, as president, I tried to do what I knew Sonny would have done. We took action. We signed executive orders to protect access to reproductive health care, including emergency medical care.”
He closed with a direct line to the room: “You have no idea how powerful women are in this country. You are about to find out.”
Those remarks cast the gala as a victory lap for abortion access. They also left out the scale of what Planned Parenthood itself reported in its most recent figures.
Planned Parenthood’s latest report, as described in the coverage, showed 434,450 abortions in 2023 and 2024. The same reporting stated the organization secured record government funding, $832 million in grants, contracts, and Medicaid reimbursements, a $39.8 million increase from the prior report.
Breitbart’s account also noted that Planned Parenthood performed a record number of abortions during Biden’s time in the White House. Separate figures cited in that reporting put the estimated total abortions between the 1973 Roe decision and the 2022 Dobbs ruling at 63 million. Biden made no mention of those numbers while accepting the award named for his friend and fellow abortion advocate.
Taxpayers underwrite a large share of this operation through grants and Medicaid. Biden’s executive-order response after Dobbs, which he highlighted from the stage, sat alongside that funding growth and the procedure totals the group logged in 2023 and 2024.
The night mixed champagne fundraising with a service award for a former president who spent four years expanding federal protection for abortion access. Jill Biden’s presentation and the crowd’s applause underscored how fully the Democratic former first couple remains aligned with the nation’s largest abortion provider.
Biden’s speech honored Sloan’s activism and promised further political muscle from women. It did not wrestle with the 434,450 abortions in the recent two-year window, the $832 million public haul, or the long-run toll counted since Roe. Those facts were available in the same reporting cycle as the gala coverage. They simply were not part of the program.
Voters who fund the grants and live with the results get a clearer picture than the stage allowed: a former president collecting an award from the group that posted the procedures and cashed the government checks.
