FBI probing 6 Democrats over video calling on military to disobey Trump's orders

Is the federal government overreaching by targeting lawmakers for their words?

A controversial video by six veteran Democrats urging military personnel to reject unlawful directives has sparked an FBI probe and fierce backlash from President Trump and GOP leaders.

The New York Post reported that last week, a video surfaced featuring six prominent Democrats, all military veterans, calling on service members to stand against orders they deem illegal. Their message, while lacking specific examples of such orders, ignited a firestorm of criticism.

The FBI and Justice Department quickly moved to seek interviews with the lawmakers involved. Those targeted include Reps. Chris Deluzio (D-Pa.), Maggie Goodlander (D-NH), Chrissy Houlahan (D-Pa.), Jason Crow (D-Col.), and Sens. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) and Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.).

The Democrats pushed back hard, accusing the Trump administration of using the FBI to intimidate them. They claim this is a direct assault on their constitutional duties.

In a joint statement, Reps. Deluzio, Goodlander, Houlahan, and Crow declared, “President Trump is using the FBI as a tool to intimidate and harass Members of Congress.” They further vowed, “No amount of intimidation or harassment will ever stop us from doing our jobs.”

Trump and GOP Slam Democrats’ Actions

They also asserted their lifelong commitment to their oaths, stating, “We swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States.” They added, “We will not be bullied.”

President Trump didn’t hold back, taking to Truth Social to condemn the video as a grave offense. He labeled it “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR” and demanded arrests and trials for the lawmakers involved.

Trump further insisted that their statements threaten the nation’s future, urging that an example must be set. GOP colleagues in Congress echoed his outrage, amplifying the partisan divide.

On Monday, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced the Pentagon is specifically investigating Sen. Mark Kelly over the video. Hegseth criticized Kelly’s conduct as damaging to the military’s reputation.

However, Hegseth clarified that the other five Democrats fall outside the Department of War’s jurisdiction. This selective focus has raised questions about consistency in accountability.

Sen. Kelly himself confirmed the FBI’s request for an interview. He stood defiant, stating, “I’ve given too much to this country to be silenced by bullies who care more about their own power than protecting the Constitution.”

Lawmakers Deny Specific Illegal Orders

Despite the bold rhetoric, none of the six Democrats pointed to concrete illegal orders they wanted service members to reject. This ambiguity has fueled skepticism about their message’s intent.

Sen. Elissa Slotkin, when pressed on ABC’s “This Week,” admitted, “To my knowledge, I am not aware of things that are illegal.” Her statement undercuts the urgency of the video’s call to action.

The use of federal agencies to probe elected officials for speech—however controversial—sets a precedent worth watching. Could this chill-free expression or emboldened executive overreach?
