FBI uncovers classified materials in Bolton office raid

 September 24, 2025

Classified documents have surfaced in a place they absolutely shouldn’t be: the office of former National Security Adviser John Bolton.

Politico reported that in a stunning turn of events, the FBI raided Bolton’s Washington, D.C. office and Maryland residence in late August, seizing sensitive materials as part of a probe into potential leaks of national security information.

This investigation isn’t just a random fishing expedition; it’s tied to allegations that Bolton improperly disclosed classified details in his 2020 memoir, "The Room Where It Happened."

During the raid on Bolton’s downtown D.C. office, agents discovered documents marked “classified,” “confidential,” and “secret,” raising serious questions about how such sensitive information was handled.

These weren’t just random papers; some of the classified files from Bolton’s tenure under President Trump dealt with heavy topics like weapons of mass destruction.

Other materials included travel memos labeled “secret” and confidential files touching on U.S. missions to the United Nations and strategic government communications—hardly the kind of stuff you’d want floating around unsecured.

Bolton’s Maryland Home Also Searched

On the same day as the office search, the FBI swept through Bolton’s Maryland residence, ensuring no stone was left unturned in this high-stakes investigation.

Agents didn’t come away empty-handed; they seized computers, hard drives, and files explicitly labeled “Trump” from both properties, hinting at the depth of the materials in question.

Turns out, accountability isn’t just a buzzword—when you’re dealing with national security, missteps can draw the full attention of federal law enforcement.

The FBI isn’t playing around, alleging that Bolton may have violated serious federal laws, including sections of the Espionage Act related to unauthorized retention or sharing of national defense information.

They’re also looking into whether he broke rules on the improper removal and storage of classified documents—laws that exist for a reason, no matter how inconvenient they might seem to some.

Adding fuel to the fire, court documents filed on Tuesday shed more light on the probe, confirming just how much is at stake when classified intel is mishandled.

Private Email Hack Raises Concerns

Here’s where it gets even murkier: the FBI affidavit claims Bolton used a private email account that was compromised by a foreign entity, potentially exposing sensitive information to hostile actors.

If true, this isn’t just a paperwork error—it’s a glaring vulnerability that could have jeopardized national security, and it’s hard to overstate the gravity of such a lapse.

While some might argue this is a witch hunt, let’s be real: protecting our nation’s secrets isn’t a partisan issue; it’s a patriotic duty, and lapses like these demand answers, not excuses.
