Filipino mayor survives RPG attack on convoy in Maguindanao

 January 29, 2026

In a daring daylight assault, a Filipino mayor narrowly escaped harm when his convoy came under fire in the southern Philippines.

Fox News reported that on Sunday at around 6:30 a.m., Mayor Akmad Ampatuan was traveling in a bulletproof vehicle in Maguindanao del Sur when an apparent rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) and gunfire targeted his entourage, injuring two security team members with non-life-threatening wounds and damaging vehicles, though the mayor emerged unscathed.

The incident unfolded with chilling precision as video footage captured two men exiting a white van, one seemingly wielding an RPG and the other armed with a gun.

One suspect aimed and fired the RPG down the street before both jumped back into the van, while a black SUV from the mayor’s convoy turned onto the road and took the brunt of the blast.

Additionally, a backup pickup truck in the convoy was riddled with bullets during the violent exchange.

Police Respond Swiftly to Suspected Attackers

Following the ambush, police and military forces pursued the perpetrators, ultimately killing three suspected attackers in the aftermath.

While the motive behind this brazen act remains unclear, the incident marks the third assassination attempt on Mayor Ampatuan in the past five years.

The violence in broad daylight has sparked concern over escalating tensions and security in the region.

Critics argue that such bold attacks signal a troubling breakdown in law and order, especially in areas already grappling with instability.

“The mayor is safe,” assured Anwar Kuit Emblawa, the mayor’s executive assistant, in a statement to the Philippine News Agency (PNA).

Safe or not, relying on bulletproof vehicles as a daily necessity speaks volumes about the perilous environment some public officials must navigate.

Questions Linger Over Motive and Safety

Two members of the mayor’s security detail were wounded, a stark reminder of the human toll in these clashes, even if their injuries aren’t life-threatening.

What’s the endgame here? If local leaders can’t travel without fear of RPGs at sunrise, then the grip of lawlessness seems tighter than ever, and progressive promises of peace through dialogue look more like wishful thinking.

This incident isn’t just a news blip; it’s a wake-up call to prioritize hardline security measures over feel-good policies that fail to address the root of such violence in vulnerable regions like Maguindanao del Sur.
