Fox News reported that on Tuesday, Dunn announced he will not seek re-election after serving five terms in the House, joining a significant wave of 49 members—22 Democrats and 27 Republicans—who have also declared they won’t run in the 2026 election cycle, according to the U.S. House of Representatives Press Gallery "Casualty List."
The physician and Army surgeon plans to return to Panama City to focus on family, particularly his grandchildren, after years of public service.
"I wanted to pass the torch to new conservative leaders, return home to Panama City, and spend more precious time with my family and our beloved grandchildren," Dunn said.
That sentiment hits hard—family over politics is a value many Americans still hold dear, even if Washington often forgets it.
Dunn’s exit is part of a broader trend, as nearly 50 House members step away, with some eyeing higher office like Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., running for governor of South Carolina, and Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., seeking the same in California.
Others, like Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, are challenging heavyweights such as Sen. John Cornyn in a Senate bid, while Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, aims for state attorney general.
This exodus, coupled with the Republicans’ slim House majority, signals a potential shift in power—though whether it’s for better or worse remains anyone’s guess.
Adding to the turbulence, former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., resigned in January 2026, and Rep. Doug LaMalfa, R-Calif., passed away in the same week, leaving vacancies that could tilt the balance.

With the midterms looming, President Donald Trump recently spoke at a House GOP retreat at the Kennedy Center, rallying lawmakers to hold the line.
"They say that when you win the presidency, you lose the midterms. You gotta win the midterms," Trump urged.
