Gavin Newsom spent $250 million on gerrymandering while begging Trump for fire aid money

 October 9, 2025

California Governor Gavin Newsom’s latest political maneuver has left many scratching their heads, as he spends a staggering $250 million on a special election while pleading for federal wildfire aid.

Breitbart reported that Newsom has lambasted the administration for ignoring his $40 billion request for disaster relief, even as he funnels state funds into a controversial redistricting effort aimed at gerrymandering Republican congressional seats.

On January 7, disaster struck California with the outbreak of the Palisades Fire and Eaton Fire, which razed tens of thousands of structures and left countless residents displaced.

The Palisades Fire, sparked on state land by an alleged arsonist days earlier, worsened due to state authorities’ failure to position firefighting resources ahead of forecasted high winds.

Displaced residents are still grappling with the devastation, struggling to rebuild homes and lives amidst the rubble.

As the crisis unfolded, Newsom turned to Washington with a hefty $40 billion aid request, only to claim that Trump had turned a blind eye to California’s plight.

Newsom's Costly Political Gambit Raises Eyebrows

Yet, in a move that has drawn sharp criticism, Newsom launched a $250 million special election for Proposition 50, a plan to redraw congressional districts in a way that could strip Republican representation.

This pricey endeavor, expected to draw equal amounts in private donations from both sides, seems a curious priority when fire victims are in desperate need.

Critics argue that Newsom’s relentless hostility toward Trump—marked by fiery rhetoric and millions spent on lawsuits against federal policies—has likely soured any chance of securing additional disaster relief beyond what the outgoing Biden administration provided.

One Palisades resident vented frustration to Breitbart News, saying, “Gavin Newsom should stop running for President of the country and make an attempt to take care of his state.”

The resident added, “His transparent posturing is infuriating as thousands of us struggle to navigate through our respective rubble and upended lives.”

Newsom’s track record with Trump is a mixed bag; while he cooperated during the darkest days of the coronavirus pandemic over medical supplies, his recent actions—including turning his official press account on X into a parody mocking Trump—paint a different picture.

Rhetoric and Redistricting Over Relief?

Adding fuel to the fire, Newsom has used harsh language, once declaring he would “punch Republicans in the mouth,” a statement that hardly fosters bipartisan goodwill.

Such combative words, paired with labeling Trump and his team as “fascists” and continuing this tone even after a tragic assassination of a conservative leader, suggest a governor more focused on political theater than practical solutions.

While Newsom defends his legal battles against Trump as necessary to protect state interests, many question the wisdom of antagonizing the very administration he expects to approve a massive aid package with no strings attached, especially when fire-ravaged communities hang in the balance.
