Governor Newsom closes major highway, falsely claims Trump administration is responsible

 October 18, 2025

California’s Interstate 5 just became the latest battlefield in a political showdown.

Fox News reported that Governor Gavin Newsom’s decision to shut down portions of this vital highway, blaming a supposed Trump administration scheme tied to a Marine Corps event, has sparked fierce backlash from critics who call it a calculated stunt.

This saga kicked off on Wednesday when Newsom’s press office pushed unfounded claims that the White House intended to close I-5 for what they dubbed a “vanity parade.”

Newsom himself doubled down, posting that day about a supposed plan to disrupt traffic for military theatrics. “Donald Trump and JD Vance think that shutting down the I-5 to shoot out missiles from ships is how you respect the military,” he wrote on social media. Talk about firing a verbal missile—too bad the target was pure fiction.

By Saturday, Newsom officially announced the closure of key I-5 stretches, warning drivers of delays and insisting the nearby Marine Corps event at Camp Pendleton posed an “extreme life safety risk and distraction.”

Here’s the rub: the event in question was a live-fire demonstration at Red Beach, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States Marine Corps, led by Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.

Marine Corps Event Draws Thousands

Thousands of Marines, sailors, veterans, and families were expected to attend this historic commemoration, conducted entirely on approved ranges with strict safety protocols, per a Marine Corps press release.

The Marines were crystal clear—no highways or public routes would be impacted by their training exercise. So why the roadblock drama?

The White House swiftly countered Newsom’s narrative, stating neither they nor the Marines had requested any closures, and no public safety concerns were tied to the event.

Republican Rep. Darrell Issa of California didn’t mince words, accusing Newsom of weaponizing his authority to spoil a meaningful military celebration.

“Today is the 250th anniversary celebration of [the United States Marine Corps] at Camp Pendleton in California. But Gavin Newsom – who never served a day in the military – is overruling the best-trained and most-experienced leaders of our Marine Corps and shutting down the main interstate highway in the San Diego region for no other reason than a spiteful publicity stunt and to ruin the occasion,” Issa posted on X.

Issa added, “It’s a disgusting abuse of power. But not at all surprising.” That’s a sharp jab, and it lands when you consider the lack of evidence for Newsom’s claims.

Adding fuel to the fire, some rumors tried to tie the alleged closure to unrelated nationwide protests scheduled for the same Saturday, but those whispers were quickly debunked as baseless.

Highway Closure Disrupts Everyday Drivers

Meanwhile, Newsom’s office stuck to its guns, continuing to frame the Marine event as a dangerous distraction to motorists, even as facts pointed elsewhere.

Let’s be real—closing a major artery like I-5 isn’t just an inconvenience; it’s a punch to the gut for everyday Californians trying to get to work or see family. While respecting military tradition is paramount, using it as a scapegoat for political posturing feels like a low blow.

At the end of the day, this highway hullabaloo seems less about safety and more about scoring points in a never-ending political game.

The Marines honored their legacy, the White House denied involvement, and yet drivers are left navigating detours. If this isn’t a metaphor for government overreach, what is?
