Kristi Noem confirms capture of sanctioned oil tanker near Venezuela

 December 20, 2025

In a striking display of resolve, the United States has nabbed a sanctioned oil tanker off Venezuela’s coast, sending a loud message to a regime it views as rogue.

DPA International reported that this high-stakes operation by the US Coast Guard, supported by military muscle, underscores the growing friction between Washington and Caracas over oil and alleged criminal ties.

The clash isn’t new, tracing back to the early 2000s when Venezuela nationalized its oil fields, leaving American companies stranded without just compensation.

By 2019, the US had imposed tough sanctions on Venezuela’s state oil giant, PDVSA, aiming to cut off financial lifelines to the Maduro government. Just days before this latest seizure, another tanker was taken by the US military in nearby waters, hinting at a stepped-up campaign.

Then, President Donald Trump upped the ante with a Truth Social post, declaring a complete blockade on sanctioned tankers moving through Venezuelan ports.

Trump’s Hard Line on Sanctioned Tankers

Trump accused the regime of using oil money for dark purposes, stating it funds “Drug Terrorism, Human Trafficking, Murder, and Kidnapping” (Donald Trump, Truth Social).

That’s a serious charge, though it fits with US claims that Venezuela acts as a key transit point for drugs heading to Europe, even if not a primary producer.

The latest operation saw the Coast Guard, backed by the Department of War and military oversight, seize a tanker recently docked in Venezuela.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem celebrated the move, saying, “The United States will continue to pursue the illicit movement of sanctioned oil that is used to fund narco terrorism in the region” (Kristi Noem, X).

She’s drawing a hard line, but one has to wonder if these seizures will dismantle networks or simply stoke more hostility from Caracas.

Venezuela’s response was swift and sharp, with its Foreign Ministry decrying the raid as “brazen robbery and an act of international piracy.”

Venezuela Slams US as Piracy Culprit

That’s strong language, but not surprising given months of escalating tensions between the two nations over sanctions and resources.

Meanwhile, US officials like Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel tied the seized vessel to networks allegedly supporting foreign terrorist groups.

With the US military already active in the Caribbean, disrupting drug shipments, this tanker grab feels like part of a broader strategy—though at what cost to global stability remains the big question.
