Eight months after Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland died by suicide at age 24, his family disclosed Tuesday that researchers at the Boston University CTE Center found Stage 1 chronic traumatic encephalopathy in his brain, a diagnosis that can only be confirmed after death and one that raises hard questions about what the NFL's concussion protocols actually prevent.
The announcement, first reported by the Daily Caller, came through a press release from the Concussion & CTE Foundation. Kneeland's family and his girlfriend, Catalina Mancera, issued a joint statement alongside the diagnosis, framing their decision to go public as an effort to protect other athletes.
Kneeland started playing tackle football at seven years old. He played at Western Michigan University before the Cowboys selected him in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft. He was in his second professional season when he died. On the day of his death, Mancera told police he had sent her a troubling message. Officers connected Kneeland to a pursuit and found him suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Dr. Ann McKee, director of the Boston University CTE Center and chief of neuropathology for the VA Boston Healthcare System, said she was not caught off guard by the findings. As Fox News reported, McKee stated plainly what the data show:
"Unfortunately, I was not surprised to find CTE in the brain of Mr. Kneeland, because we have found this progressive brain disease in nearly half of the athletes we've studied who have died before the age of 30."

Kneeland's family donated his brain tissue for research through the Concussion & CTE Foundation after his passing, a decision that made the diagnosis possible.
Nowinski added a broader warning about the current generation of players. "We have no reason to believe the current generation is at a lower risk of CTE than previous generations," he said.
That statement deserves more attention than it will likely receive. It amounts to a direct challenge to the NFL's narrative of progress. Better helmets, stricter rules on targeting, independent neurological consultants on the sidelines, none of it, according to the researchers who actually examine these brains, has changed the underlying risk.
Kneeland was 24. His girlfriend gave birth to their child after his death. The New York Post reported that Catalina Mancera welcomed their baby on June 11, captioning photos of the newborn wearing a onesie featuring Kneeland in his Cowboys jersey with the words, "My favorite gift from you."
The family's public statement was measured and generous. They did not point fingers. They did not file suit, at least not yet. They asked for understanding.
"While this diagnosis does not change the tragedy of his passing, it provides important context about some of the struggles he may have been facing. We share this information to help people understand what NFL and other high contact sport athletes might be struggling with. Raising awareness is important to us."
