Massachusetts woman stabs California mother in Macy’s restroom during baby-changing incident

 December 13, 2025

Picture a holiday trip morphing into a nightmare as a mother is brutally attacked while changing her infant in a crowded New York City department store.

In a horrifying event at Macy’s Herald Square, a California mother was stabbed repeatedly by Kerri Aherne, a Massachusetts woman, while tending to her 10-month-old daughter in a restroom on Thursday.

The New York Post reported that this shocking assault disrupted what was meant to be a joyous family getaway, turning a festive outing into a fight for survival.

The attack unfolded as the unsuspecting mother was struck in the back, shoulder, and arm with a knife that prosecutors say Aherne bought inside the store just prior to the incident.

Showing incredible bravery, the mother fought back and subdued her assailant, protecting her baby from harm during the terrifying ordeal.

“She works out. She’s pretty fit,” noted family friend Justine Silva, pointing to the victim’s strength that likely made the difference.

Attacker’s Troubling History Comes to Light

While the baby remained unharmed and was described as calm and sweet by loved ones, the incident left deep emotional scars on the family.

The baby’s father, in particular, was reported as exhausted and stressed, grappling with the trauma of nearly losing his only child.

Aherne, the alleged attacker, had been released from a psychiatric facility mere hours before the stabbing, spotlighting glaring gaps in mental health oversight.

Authorities confirmed Aherne has a history of mental illness, and prosecutors disclosed she admitted to hearing voices compelling her to kill during the attack.

Now charged with attempted murder, assault, child endangerment, and weapons possession, Aherne faces serious legal repercussions for her actions.

What should have been a cherished first trip to New York with their infant became a horror story for this close-knit California family.

Public Safety Concerns and Online Backlash

“They just had the baby not too long ago and were just trying to get [away] on holiday,” Silva shared, emphasizing the innocence of their plans.

With no clear date to return home and a court date set for Monday, the family is stuck navigating the aftermath of this senseless violence.

This tragedy raises tough questions about a system that releases individuals with known mental health struggles without proper safeguards, a failure of progressive policies that often seem to value ideals over practical safety—a bitter pill for law-abiding citizens to swallow.
