Milwaukee judge resigns after helping illegal immigrant evade ICE

 January 4, 2026

Milwaukee Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan has just stepped down after a jaw-dropping conviction for helping an unauthorized migrant slip past federal authorities.

This saga unfolded with Dugan’s resignation to Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers, following a federal conviction for obstructing an official proceeding after she assisted an unauthorized migrant in evading U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials.

Breitbart reported that the trouble started when Dugan, in a move that raised more than a few eyebrows, personally escorted Eduardo Flores Ruiz, an unauthorized migrant, out of her courtroom to avoid ICE apprehension.

In December, a Milwaukee jury found Dugan guilty of obstructing an official proceeding, a charge that could carry up to five years in prison.

Yet, as the New York Times notes, being a first-time offender might mean Dugan faces little to no time behind bars—a leniency some might call a dodged bullet.

Still, the conviction alone was enough to push Dugan to resign, a decision she described as being made “with a heavy heart.”

Judicial Independence Under Federal Scrutiny

Dugan didn’t go quietly, framing her exit as a stand against what she sees as overreach by federal authorities.

“As you know, I am the subject of unprecedented federal legal proceedings, which are far from concluded but which present immense and complex challenges that threaten the independence of our judiciary,” Dugan stated in her resignation letter.

While her words drip with concern for judicial autonomy, let’s not kid ourselves—helping someone dodge federal enforcement isn’t exactly a shining moment for impartiality, no matter how noble the intent.

Dugan doubled down, insisting her battle isn’t just personal but a defense of the courts themselves.

“I am pursuing this fight for myself and for our independent judiciary,” she declared, adding that Wisconsin citizens deserve a functioning judge in Milwaukee County Branch 31 rather than a courtroom mired in political mudslinging.

Admirable sentiment, perhaps, but one wonders if the citizens she cherishes might also appreciate a judiciary that doesn’t play fast and loose with federal law.

Balancing Justice and Compassion

Let’s be clear: immigration enforcement is a lightning rod issue, and Dugan’s actions likely stem from a place of compassion, misguided though they may be.

But when a judge steps beyond interpreting the law to actively subverting it, we’ve got a problem bigger than any single courtroom—it’s a crack in the foundation of trust in our legal system.

While progressive agendas might cheer such defiance as a stand against harsh policies, conservatives rightly worry this sets a dangerous precedent where personal beliefs trump legal duty, leaving us all to wonder where the line is drawn.
