Minnesota Governor Tim Walz confirms he will not run for governor, will leave politics

 January 29, 2026

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz has stunned the political world with a definitive announcement that his days in elected office are over.

Fox News reported that Walz confirmed he will not run for a third term as governor in 2026, a decision announced earlier this month, and further stated he will never seek any elected position again, amidst a massive fraud scandal and escalating tensions over federal immigration enforcement in Minnesota, including fatal shootings by federal agents in Minneapolis.

Walz’s career began in rural Nebraska, enlisting in the Army National Guard in 1981, later teaching in China, and eventually settling in Minnesota in 1996 as a high school geography teacher.

His political ascent started in 2006 with a successful run for the U.S. House of Representatives, followed by his election as governor in 2018 and re-election in 2022.

Fraud Scandal Overshadows Walz's Tenure

A massive fraud scandal has cast a dark shadow over Walz’s time in office, with over 90 individuals, many from Minnesota’s Somali community, charged since 2022 in schemes involving money laundering through fraudulent meal programs, housing initiatives, daycare centers, and Medicaid services.

Federal prosecutors estimate the scope of the theft could range from $1 billion to as much as $9 billion, with some guilty parties allegedly splurging on luxury cars, real estate, jewelry, and international trips, while other funds may have been diverted overseas to dangerous groups.

Walz has taken heat from both Republicans and some Democrats for the oversight failures, with nearly a dozen GOP candidates now making this scandal the cornerstone of their campaigns to replace him.

Adding fuel to the fire, Minnesota has become a flashpoint in the national debate over federal immigration enforcement, particularly under President Donald Trump’s crackdown on unauthorized migration.

Tragically, two U.S. citizens were fatally shot by federal agents in Minneapolis during deportation operations after instigating the agents, intensifying local protests and drawing sharp criticism of federal tactics.

Walz has publicly acknowledged the weight of these crises, stating, “This is on my watch, I am accountable for this and, more importantly, I am the one that will fix it,” to reporters last December.

Walz Steps Away from Political Arena

Despite earlier speculation about a potential 2028 presidential run, Walz has now firmly closed that door, declaring, “I will never run for an elected office again. Never again,” in an interview with MS NOW.

While some might applaud his willingness to step aside, others question if this exit is less about principle and more about dodging the fallout of a tenure increasingly defined by scandal and strife.

With Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar launching her gubernatorial campaign just yesterday, the party scrambles to retain control of the governor’s office in a state that leans blue but now faces a electorate hungry for accountability after years of mismanagement and unchecked fraud.
