Minnesota's Lt. Gov. stands by Somali community despite massive fraud scandal

 December 26, 2025

Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan just stepped into a political firestorm by wearing a hijab on TV, signaling support for the Somali community while a massive fraud scandal unfolds.

The New York Post reported that this striking gesture at Karmel Mall in Minneapolis arrives as federal and congressional investigations reveal up to $9 billion allegedly defrauded from taxpayer funds through Somali-linked nonprofits in the state.

The drama began earlier this week when Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey publicly criticized an ICE raid at Karmel Mall, where four people were detained during a federal immigration crackdown.

Flanagan's Gesture Ignites Heated Debate

By Thursday, Flanagan was on camera with local officials in a video aired by Somali TV of Minnesota, sporting a hijab in what she framed as a show of solidarity.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, a Minnesota Republican, wasn’t buying it, blasting the move as pure political posturing that distracts from the real issues at hand.

“Anyone with common sense sees right through this stunt,” Emmer declared, suggesting Flanagan’s optics-driven approach undermines the gravity of the situation.

Now, let’s talk dollars and sense—the fraud allegations are staggering, with nearly half of the $18 billion in federal funds sent to Minnesota since 2018 reportedly misused by certain nonprofits.

U.S. Attorney Joe Thompson called it “staggering, industrial-scale fraud,” emphasizing this isn’t just petty theft but a systemic breakdown that demands answers.

One notorious case involves Feeding Our Future, a nonprofit accused of diverting over $250 million into luxury purchases and foreign real estate, from Kenya to Turkey.

State Leaders Face Mounting Criticism

Gov. Walz has admitted that aid program loopholes were exploited by criminals, though some Minnesota Department of Human Services employees have pointed the finger directly at him for oversight failures.

Walz previously tried deflecting blame to a judge for restarting payments to Feeding Our Future in 2021, but that excuse didn’t hold water with critics.

In response to growing outrage and media scrutiny, Walz set up an anti-fraud task force, while the House Oversight Committee, under Chairman James Comer, demands detailed records from state officials.

Back at Karmel Mall, Flanagan highlighted her connection to Nimco Ahmed, a Somali-American political figure, while encouraging Minnesotans to support local immigrant-owned businesses amid the tension.

“I am here shopping today and just encourage other folks to show up, support our Somali businesses, support our immigrant neighbors, and I know that things are scary right now,” Flanagan said, positioning her actions as community uplift rather than a publicity grab.

Yet, with federal probes deepening and ICE actions stoking fear, one wonders if symbolic scarves can mend the trust broken by billion-dollar scandals—or if they’re just a distraction from accountability.
