Transgender woman charged with murder after Chicago stabbing leaves knife tip in victim’s skull

 October 12, 2026

A Chicago transgender woman is charged with first-degree murder after allegedly stabbing a man repeatedly and leaving a knife tip in his skull following comments about her gender.

Kelly Day, 32, faces a first-degree murder charge in the death of 50-year-old Larry Young after an attack outside a gas station on Chicago’s Far South Side, prosecutors told a bond court.

Young died of multiple sharp force injuries. The Cook County medical examiner’s office recovered the tip of a metal knife from his skull. Police later found the rest of the knife with part of the blade missing.

Assistant State’s Attorney Sara Grgurovic told a judge at Central Bond Court that Day became “extremely angry” after Young made comments about her gender. Day was born male and identifies as a woman.

Bathroom mockery came earlier the same day

Earlier that Wednesday, a separate group of strangers had mocked Day for using the women’s bathroom at a McDonald’s. Young was not part of that group, according to the prosecutor’s account.

Later, Young approached Day on the street and made comments about her gender. An argument followed. Day’s partner tried to pull her away. Young pushed Day and walked toward a gas station across the street.

Day then told her wife she did not want “bullies” to get away with making fun of her gender. She followed Young. The fight resumed.

Surveillance described in court showed Day holding a knife above Young while he was on the ground, then stabbing him. Prosecutors said the attack involved 13 wounds to the head, neck, and upper shoulders. A 7-year-old stepson was present at the scene with Day and her partner.

Conflicting 911 calls and a hospital arrest

Day called 911 and reported she had been injured while protecting herself from a “pervert.” She tossed the knife and fled.

In a later 911 call, she claimed she had cut herself while cooking. Day went to a city hospital for treatment of a cut finger. Police arrested her there.

After the arrest, Day told investigators that Young had used a gay slur, made a gun gesture, and threatened to have someone beat her up. That account differed from the self-defense claim and the cooking story she had already given.

Prosecutors presented the sequence as anger over gender comments, a decision to follow Young, and a sustained stabbing captured in part on surveillance. Day remains in custody pending trial. The next court date was set for Tuesday after the Saturday bond hearing.

What the charging decision put on the record

The first-degree murder charge and the decision to hold Day without release rested in part on the nature of the wounds and the knife tip left in Young’s skull. Grgurovic laid out the bathroom incident, the later street confrontation, the partner’s attempt to intervene, the surveillance description, the discarded knife, and the shifting explanations Day gave after the attack.

Young’s exact words were not quoted in full in the court account beyond the report of comments about Day’s gender. No absolute calendar dates, precise street address, hospital name, or case docket number appeared in the available reporting. The medical examiner’s finding of multiple sharp force injuries and the recovery of the knife tip stood as the official cause-of-death detail.

Day’s presence in the women’s bathroom at McDonald’s earlier that day, the mockery by strangers unconnected to Young, and the later fatal encounter outside the gas station formed the chain prosecutors described. A child was on the scene. A knife broke. A man died.

When an adult answers mockery with a blade and leaves metal in another man’s skull, the charge file should read exactly as this one does.
