Trump attributes economic surge to tariff policies

 December 23, 2025

President Donald Trump is heralding a new era of American prosperity, and he’s pointing to his tariff policies as the golden ticket.

Newsmax reported that Trump took to Truth Social on Tuesday to celebrate a Commerce Department report showing a robust 4.3% annual GDP growth rate for the third quarter, crediting his tariffs and tax measures for driving what he calls a remarkable economic boom.

The report, delayed by a recent government shutdown, revealed that the GDP increased from July to September outpaced the 3.8% growth seen in the prior quarter and surpassed the roughly 3% forecast by analysts.

Strong Growth Fueled by Key Factors

Driving this economic upswing were vigorous consumer spending, a notable rise in exports, and increased government outlays, all painting a picture of a nation on the move.

Consumer spending alone jumped to a 3.5% annual rate, up from 2.5% previously, showing Americans are opening their wallets with confidence.

Exports also soared, while business investment saw gains, as noted by Barron's, signaling that Trump’s policies might indeed be steering the ship in the right direction.

Trump didn’t hold back on Truth Social, proclaiming, “The TARIFFS are responsible” for the “GREAT USA Economic Numbers,” a statement that’s sure to spark debate among policy wonks.

While his enthusiasm is infectious, one wonders if tariffs alone can claim all the credit when consumer and government spending are also revving the engine.

Still, Trump doubled down, asserting that tariffs are not just boosting domestic production but also reshaping trade balances for the better, a cornerstone of his “America First” vision.

Supporters Rally Behind Economic Strategy

Allies of the president argue this GDP surge validates an economic approach that prioritizes protecting U.S. industries and pressuring foreign competitors through tariffs.

They see this as proof that putting American workers and businesses first isn’t just rhetoric—it’s yielding tangible results for the nation’s bottom line.

Yet, analysts caution that trade flows might be skewed temporarily by shifting expectations around tariffs, a reminder that economic policies can have unpredictable ripples.

Despite the rosy numbers, inflation remains a stubborn thorn, with the personal consumption expenditures price index climbing at a 2.8% pace, above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target.

This persistent price pressure, with core inflation at 2.9%, could nudge the Fed to rethink interest rate moves, potentially dampening the celebration Trump is leading with his bold claim on Truth Social: “Trump Economic Golden Age is FULL steam ahead.”

Adding to future concerns, the recent government shutdown is expected to drag down fourth-quarter growth by as much as 1 to 2 percentage points, a sobering note amidst the current triumph.
