Trump hails Alito as a great man after retirement report resurfaces

 October 16, 2026

President Trump praised Justice Samuel Alito as “a great man” after sharing a report that the conservative justice is weighing retirement from the Supreme Court.

In a 4:47 a.m. Truth Social post, Trump circulated a Politico piece headlined “Justice Alito confirms he is considering retirement,” and added his own short verdict: “A great man!!! President DJT.”

The Daily Beast reported the overnight post and noted that the Politico article was already about two weeks old, dated October 2. No White House comment was provided when sought.

Alito, 76, has not announced a departure date. He has said retirement is something a justice his age has to weigh each term, while also making plain he still believes he can serve.

Alito says he still has work to do

The comments came in a CBS News interview. Alito addressed the question directly and without drama.

He told CBS News:

"It’s something that I think that somebody at my age has to think about every term,"

He followed that with the reason he remains on the bench:

"But I thought that I could still make a valuable contribution, which is why I became a justice and a judge in the first place."

On timing and politics, he refused to play fortune-teller. He said it is too hard to guess the political climate or what any president might do with a vacancy.

His words, again from the CBS interview:

"It’s too hard to predict what the political situation will be and what any president might do with respect to a replacement,"

That is not a resignation letter. It is a veteran justice describing the ordinary duty to take stock, and choosing, for now, to keep contributing.

Trump already reshaped the Court once

If Alito did step down after the current term ends next summer, Trump would get another high-court pick. He has already placed three justices on the Supreme Court: Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett.

A fourth seat would extend that record. Trump is 80. Alito is 76. The ages alone explain why retirement talk never fully goes quiet on a nine-member Court.

Trump’s post did not lay out a succession plan. It did not demand a timeline. It praised the man and pointed readers to the existing report. The signal was respect, not a personnel memo.

The justice who wrote the Dobbs opinion

Alito authored the 2022 majority opinion that overturned Roe v. Wade and ended the nationwide constitutional right to an abortion as the Court had defined it. In the same CBS interview, he defended the decision and the fortitude it required after a draft leaked.

He said:

"We didn’t know it when we produced the draft that was leaked, but it required courage to go ahead with that because of the implications,"

That record is why conservatives view him as more than a vote count. He carried one of the defining constitutional corrections of the modern Court and did it under intense pressure.

Trump’s “great man” line fits that history. It treats Alito as a serious jurist whose work mattered, not as a chess piece to be hurried off the board.

What remains unsettled

No retirement has been filed. No date certain has been set. The Daily Beast account shows Trump amplifying a Politico report and praising Alito; it does not show a White House push or a justice’s farewell.

Senate confirmation would matter for any future nominee, and majority control always shapes the path. Alito himself stressed how hard those political variables are to read in advance. He left the public with consideration, not a countdown.

A photo from July 23, 2019, of Trump with Alito has circulated with coverage of the relationship. It does not change the present facts: a morning post, an older report, and a justice still describing unfinished work.

When a president calls a sitting justice a great man while retirement talk is in the air, voters should hear the praise clearly, and remember who actually moved the Court back toward the Constitution when it counted.
