Rep. Rob Wittman says his Henrico County prosecutor opponent Shannon Taylor is a proud progressive prosecutor who reduced child sex charges, cut an infant abuser’s sentence, and went easy on police assailants.
Virginia Rep. Rob Wittman used a Breitbart News Daily appearance to draw a sharp line between himself and his reelection opponent, describing Shannon Taylor as a progressive prosecutor whose charging decisions leave victims and neighborhoods at risk.
Wittman, the Republican representing Virginia’s 1st Congressional District, said Taylor serves as chief prosecutor in Henrico County and “proudly displays that moniker.” He tied her approach to Fairfax County prosecutor Steve Descano, whom he called famous for releasing criminals and going easy on them after Judiciary Committee testimony.
“My opponent is the prosecutor in Henrico County, and she is a progressive prosecutor,” Wittman said. He added that she operates “the same way.”
"It’s incredible some of the cases. I have to give the listeners some examples. She had a sexual offender, somebody that sexually assaulted children, had nine felony counts against this individual, and she decided, well, no, I’m not going to pursue them as a felony count. I’m going to pursue them as a misdemeanor, which is nothing more than a traffic ticket."
Wittman said the result was one year in jail and no sex-offender registry requirement. That left the offender “back out on the street” and “living in somebody’s neighborhood,” he warned, “potentially to sexually abuse children again.”
Wittman next described a nursing-home abuse case. He said a 51-year-old impaired individual abused an 82-year-old Alzheimer’s patient. Police, the Virginia Department of Health, and the Virginia Board of Nursing all supplied evidence, he claimed. Taylor still declined to prosecute.
“So this person was released back out in the street,” Wittman said. Six months later, he added, the same individual went on to abuse more nursing-home patients.
He framed the decision as part of a larger pattern: “unbelievably sympathetic she is to criminals.”
Wittman then turned to a neonatal intensive care nurse he said abused eight premature infants. He corrected himself mid-remark from six to eight. The abuse included breaking bones in the babies’ hands and feet. Those children, he said, will live with the injuries for the rest of their lives.
"This individual should have been prosecuted with a 45-year sentence. My opponent decided to reduce the sentencing down to three years. That’s four months for every baby that was abused by this by this individual."
“And think about this,” he continued. “So this person gets three years back out on the street, and those infants are going to live with those injuries for the rest of their lives.” He pointed to how the broken bones heal and what the children will face afterward. “I mean, it’s unbelievable.”
Wittman also cited assaults on officers. Over the last few years, he said, there were 177 felony assault-on-police cases in her jurisdiction. On 75 percent of them, he claimed, Taylor reduced the charge to a misdemeanor, “to a traffic ticket for assaulting a police officer.”
He summed up the record in plain terms: “So she doesn’t support police. She’s sympathetic to criminals. She doesn’t stand on the side of victims. She doesn’t stand on the side of the citizens in Henrico County who elected her as the chief prosecutor in the county.”
The interview, labeled September 29, 2026 on the Breitbart News Daily audio, aired in the show’s weekday morning window on SiriusXM Patriot. Wittman offered the case examples as voters in Virginia’s 1st District weigh the choice between a sitting Republican congressman and a county prosecutor he paints as soft on the worst offenders.
No charging documents, docket numbers, or official dispositions appear in the available remarks, and Taylor’s response is not part of the interview. The congressman’s account stands as his direct challenge: progressive charging policies have real victims, and Henrico residents are living with the results.
When prosecutors treat child sex felonies like traffic tickets and infant bone-breakers like short-term cases, the people who pay the price are not the ideologues. They are the kids, the elderly, and the cops left holding the line.
