Barbara Bush donated $2,500 to a super PAC supporting Democrat James Talarico in the Texas Senate race against Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Breitbart News reported that the Austin American-Statesman flagged the contribution after reviewing Federal Election Commission records, which list the gift on September 23, 2026.
The money went to Lone Star Rising PAC, a super PAC already pouring millions into Talarico’s bid and into attacks on Paxton. FEC filings show the donor name, the recipient committee, the $2,500 amount, and the September date.
Talarico, an Austin state representative, is the Democratic candidate in the Texas U.S. Senate contest. Paxton is the Republican nominee. Recent polling has shown Paxton narrowly ahead as voters head toward the November midterms.
Campaign finance expert Andrew Cates noted that Bush did not hide the gift. She could have.
Cates, a political attorney, told Houston Public Media and KERA that a donor of her standing had options if secrecy had been the goal.
"I would imagine that somebody in such a prominent political family, if she wanted to ensure that her contribution was anonymous or not visible, that any number of lawyers that they probably have at their disposal could have told her how."
He added that she skipped the dark-money route entirely.
"She didn’t give it to a [501] (c)(4), in which her contribution would have been completely anonymous. She gave it to a PAC that reports all the money in and out,"
Lone Star Rising reports contributions in and out. That is why her name is now public.
Barbara Bush’s check is small beside the PAC’s biggest backer. Democrat megadonor and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman has given more than $10 million to Lone Star Rising PAC, according to earlier reports citing FEC filings and Bloomberg.
The PAC has spent millions boosting Talarico and hammering Paxton. Bush’s $2,500 lands inside that same machine.
Barbara Bush is the daughter of former President George W. Bush. She has said she does not identify with either political party. She has also advocated for abortion.
In October 2024 she spent time in Pennsylvania campaigning for then-Vice President Kamala Harris before Harris lost to Donald Trump. The new donation fits that same leftward pattern: a Bush family name publicly helping a Democrat against a conservative Republican in a marquee Senate race.
Paxton’s campaign has framed the contest in plain terms on its website.
"This election will determine whether Texas remains the conservative stronghold that leads America or becomes another state controlled by the radical left."
Lone Star Rising exists to make the second outcome more likely. Bush’s money now helps fund that effort.
The FEC record is not complicated. A prominent member of a Republican presidential family wrote a check to a super PAC whose job is electing a Democrat over Texas’s attorney general. She did it in a way that put her name on the public report.
Talarico gets the help. Paxton gets another reminder that some legacy Republican names no longer back the party’s line on the ground that matters most, winning Texas and keeping it from sliding left.
Family brands do not vote. Donors do. And this one just picked a side.
