Trump hits Bill Maher as a ‘complete, total loser’ in record Truth Social broadside

 October 26, 2026

President Trump unloaded a 1,322-word Truth Social attack branding Bill Maher a complete loser after the HBO comic claimed Trump held the worst midterm approval on record.

President Trump answered Bill Maher’s latest jab with the longest social media post of his public life, a Sunday Truth Social message that tore into the HBO host’s ratings claims, dinner stories, and on-air jabs.

The New York Post reported the post ran about 1,300 words and was later pegged at 1,322, with Factba.se calling it the longest of 97,455 Trump social posts tracked since 2011, roughly 600 words longer than a prior Sept. 30 message hailing South Korea’s $200 billion U.S. investments.

The blast came days after Maher, 70, host of “Real Time” on HBO, claimed Friday that Trump “has the lowest approval rating of any midterm candidate ever.” Maher also joked that an Oct. 15 White House dinner lasted longer than Katie Zacharia’s stint as press secretary.

Trump did not treat the dig as comedy. He framed it as a string of falsehoods from a fading show on a network he said had lost its edge.

Two White House dinners, then a sudden break

The feud did not start cold. On March 31, 2025, Trump hosted Maher at the White House with Kid Rock and UFC chief Dana White. On Oct. 15, Maher returned for dinner with Trump and Stephen A. Smith.

Maher described the later meal as a four-hour sit-down. Trump rejected that account.

In the Truth Social post, Trump wrote that the meeting “didn’t last four hours, it lasted two hours, maybe less, and everybody was happy,” adding that “we have the timestamps.”

"Overall, I thought it was a good meeting. It didn’t last four hours, it lasted two hours, maybe less, and everybody was happy."

Just two days before the Sunday tirade, Trump struck a warmer note with White House reporters. He called the dinner “very informative,” praised the guests as “smart people,” and said Stephen A. Smith was “great.”

"Stephen A. is great. Bill Maher, I tell you what. He likes me a lot more than people understand, and I actually like him. It was a good dinner."

By Sunday, that goodwill was gone. Trump opened by branding Maher a “COMPLETE AND TOTAL LOSER” and attacked the comic’s HBO platform as a “Low Rated Show on equally Low Rated HBO.”

"Let’s talk about this COMPLETE AND TOTAL LOSER, Bill Maher. He’s got a Low Rated Show on equally Low Rated HBO, which was once, long ago, a Network of Quality and Excitement, But that’s all gone. It’s not “HOT” anymore!"

He also claimed Maher “looked like hell,” walked through the White House with alcohol in hand, and relied on a “Laugh Machine” for canned reaction. Trump tied the dinners to producer Chuck LaBella, whom he described as a longtime associate who once worked on “The Apprentice” and helped arrange the meetings after repeated calls.

Poll numbers Trump says Maher ignored

Maher’s core political claim was that Trump sat at historically low midterm approval. Trump answered with CNN figures he said cut the other way.

He wrote that CNN showed him at 98% and 99% support inside the Republican Party, higher than Ronald Reagan’s 86% in the comparison he cited, and that another CNN measure ranked him the most popular figure in GOP history at 53%, with Reagan at 18% and Abraham Lincoln at 8%.

Trump also cited CNN’s Harry Enten calling him “The Most Influential President of the Last Century.” In Trump’s telling, Maher was not offering analysis. He was lying about Republican loyalty while fronting a show Trump said he would never appear on.

“When I became President, I agreed to meet, after the first one, and the last one, but never agreed to do his show, which he wants me to do, DESPARATELY, It won’t happen!” Trump wrote.

Press pool joke, California voters, and a no-show reply

Maher had pressed White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt on air about the briefing room, asking whether Trump wanted to “get rid of the press pool in the White House and make it into an actual swimming pool.”

Trump denied any such plan in flat terms.

"I am not building a swimming pool in the White House Briefing Room, and never had any intention of doing so."

He said he is weighing moving the press to free space the White House needs, not turning the briefing room into a pool. He praised Leavitt’s performance while calling her interviewer a “biased, dumb SLEAZEBAG” who stacked “Lie after Lie.”

Trump also accused Maher of lying about illegal voters in California, writing that officials “found 20,000” in recent days and that the number “could easily go to over 1,000,000.” He said he would not waste more time fact-checking the rest of Maher’s claims.

Maher’s own monologue tone was swagger, not apology. He told viewers, “Yeah I did it again b****es.” As of the initial reporting, he had not answered Trump’s post.

Trump closed the marathon message the same way he often ends long missives: “Thank you for your attention to this matter.” He also vowed that Republicans should stop treating Maher as “transformative,” promised never to watch the show again, and labeled it “FAKE NEWS.”

Left-wing comics can work a studio audience all night. Record Republican support, dinner timestamps, and a denied swimming-pool yarn are harder to laugh off.
