Meghan Markle says she kept kids from father after years-old child abuse image claims

 October 25, 2026

Meghan Markle says she barred her father from her children after 2018 abuse-image allegations, as her half-brother now claims he found hundreds of explicit files in the Philippines.

The Duchess of Sussex released a statement Friday addressing claims against her father, Thomas Markle Sr., after her half-brother went public with a reported discovery of child sexual abuse images. Daily Caller reported she framed the distance from her father as a deliberate choice to shield her kids.

Markle said a letter with “troubling and disturbing allegations” against her father was sent years earlier to British authorities and later shared with her. She said she received assurances the claims were under investigation and acted accordingly for her children’s safety.

Her half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., alleged he found “hundreds, if not thousands” of explicit images involving children among their father’s belongings. Thomas Markle Sr. has flatly denied every accusation and called them lies offered for money.

Brother describes storage bins and a computer left behind

Thomas Markle Jr. said he came across the material while dealing with items left at his father’s former home in Cebu, Philippines. He described four large storage bins and a computer that displayed a screensaver with explicit images, plus a video of a young girl in a sex act.

New York Post reporting focused on the location of the alleged stash and the circumstances of its discovery after the father had moved on.

Jr. said he reported what he found to police. Philippine authorities have confirmed an investigation is underway. The FBI has said it would assist as appropriate.

The Sussexes have spent recent years navigating public life after stepping back from senior royal roles, including their first official joint outing in Nottingham following a UK return.

Thomas Markle Sr. rejected the claims in the strongest terms. He said the computers in question had been boxed up in Rosarito, Mexico, when he left with his son in January 2025 and placed on a cargo ship that took months to reach the Philippines.

He told interviewers he never downloaded pornography of any kind on those machines and would welcome an expert examination.

"Never. Never. Never. I have never done that."

He added that the accusations arrived “with no proof” and asked how anyone could level such charges without evidence. He accused his son of inventing the story for money.

British police confirm a letter, and their own limited response

Meghan Markle’s statement put a 2018 letter at the center of her decision-making. She said it went to the Metropolitan Police and the Royalty and Specialist Protection unit, then reached her.

Fox News carried her full explanation that the break with her father and the ban on contact with her children, Archie and Lilibet, existed for one reason only.

"I hope it can now be understood that, despite certain media publications’ distortion over the years, any distance from my father and my choice to not allow him to have contact with our children, was for one reason: to protect them."

She also said she trusted authorities were doing the same for other families and that “the breadth of what has now been uncovered is more sickening than one could ever imagine.” She hoped “justice will be fully served.”

Their broader standing with the monarchy remains constrained, with King Charles formally barring Harry and Meghan from royal duties even after their return to Britain.

Metropolitan Police later confirmed receipt of a letter, dated January 2019 in their account, that contained claims of alleged offending by Thomas Markle Sr. outside the United Kingdom. Police shared that letter with Harry and Meghan’s office.

They did not share the allegations with other law-enforcement agencies. Officials are now reviewing how the matter was handled and considering a referral to the police watchdog.

Breitbart reported the force’s admission that the claims stayed inside a narrow channel for years before the latest public explosion.

Years of silence meet a sudden public fight

Markle opened her statement with clear distress at the news that surfaced in the preceding day.

"I am deeply distressed at the news that has come to light in the last 24 hours, and my thoughts are with any children who may have been harmed."

She tied her long-running estrangement directly to the earlier letter and the assurances she said she received. The timeline she offered stretches back to the same period when she and Prince Harry were still recalibrating life outside full-time royal work and later weighed a path back toward Britain.

No arrests or formal charges appear in the current reporting. The dispute inside the Markle family remains sharp: one son describes a large cache of illegal images and a police report; the father calls the entire account fabricated and financially motivated; the daughter says she was warned years ago and chose distance to protect her own children.

Public fascination with the Sussexes has swung from royal wedding coverage to documentaries and commentary about their professional future, including moments when critics told them to “disappear professionally” after underwhelming projects.

This episode is different. It centers on allegations of child sexual abuse material, a letter that sat with British police, a decision not to route those claims to other agencies, and a family now airing the conflict in public.

Thomas Markle Jr.’s account and Thomas Markle Sr.’s denials cannot both be true. Philippine authorities and the FBI now sit in the mix. The Metropolitan Police are examining their own earlier choices.

Meghan Markle’s statement attempts to settle one question she has faced for years: why the cutoff from her father was so complete. Her answer is blunt, she believed the children needed protection. The harder questions about evidence, timelines, and institutional follow-through remain open.

Claims involving the sexual abuse of children are not tabloid garnish. They require thorough investigation, clear evidence standards, and zero patience for agencies that receive warnings and then keep them in a drawer.
